Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jun 23, 2008 12:19 am Hi All,
I am a first home buyer. My home is in Craigieburn. My first query is "do I need a professional landscaper for my front yard and back yard landscaping?". When i asked my friends, I got mixed replies. Is it easy to do on your won? If not, does someone know professional/reliable landscaper in Craigieburn area? Aprrox how much does it cost? Thanks in advance for your help. Regards, Re: Landscaping in Craigieburn 2Jun 24, 2008 1:40 am No you don't. Even someone who has no gardening experience at all can sow lawn seed and plant some flaxes near the house with a rock bed.
As for a more full on garden it depends how handy you are. Im not an awesome gardener but i love fiddling around on the weekends. There are hundreds of sources for ideas Building NB Hampton 19e finishing at end july 08 Re: Landscaping in Craigieburn 4Jun 24, 2008 11:37 am All of the above are valid points, it really comes down to your time, your budget and your abilities.
Our front garden was included in the land price, Anyone with a shovel, a hammer and a wheelbarrow could do it. But its nice, and nearly maintenance free. Without blowing my own horn, I am a fairly technical and hands on person. I am doing our back garden, which includes retaining walls, paving, a water feature and lawn. So far I have done the shed, the watering system and tank (not connected to mains or toilets) water feature wall, leveling and retaing walls. 50 sq metres of deck and some lighting. I have talked to gardeners and irrigation people, I have talked to garden supply companies, lawn providers, water feature companies and landscapers. Nurseries will offer plenty of advise, some offer a basic design service as well. The main thing with irriaton is to do homework on water pressures and water system capabilites. I would suggst a visit to your local Reece plumbing, or even Waterpros who can help you out. Remember you can get a landscaper to do the hard stuff, and you do the rest. Why pay a guy $40 per hour to shovel dirt when you can do that. Think about what you want, think about what you can afford, and whether or not you can do it Adrian B Re: Landscaping in Craigieburn 5Jun 25, 2008 8:53 am Adrian is absolutely correct, your budget should be your main consideration. Professional landscapers can be very expensive, however all the planning can be done by house owners. the first port of call a library with beautiful books fulll of other people's gardens. Why reinvent the wheel when others have done it already ... and later you can employ people to do the hard work in stages, like retaining walls if you need them, draining system (very important!!!!!) and soil preparation. Planting really is the last thing. Some people just plant grass as a temporary measure to stop dirt being carried into the house and they later plant screening plants and trees once they get the feel of the house and block.
However, if your budget allows it go for it find professional people in yellow pages or newspaper and ask for examples of gardens that they have build. Contact the owners asking whether they are happy with the work, you could also ask if you could see their gardens. I think it is a reasonable thing to do. My son works for a big landscaping company, they do huge projects costing up to $80 K (private homes mind you) and this approach is accepted. Good luck and have fun, this is your space and should work for you. Maggie Hmmm, I have checked your past posts and it seems that you are in NSW, not WA as I had thought. It pays to show your State in your avatar.
