Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 17, 2015 11:28 am Hi All, I have used granitic sand (decomposed granite) in my back yard for pathways. After rain it can be somewhat soft in areas, to the point where footprints remain and it gets over your shoes. Once it dries it hardens up like concrete. I believe I tried to ensure a gentle fall across the paths but in some small areas, after a lot of rain, I will get some pooling of water. It disappears quite quickly after the rain stops but of course those areas remain softest for a while. Any thoughts/suggestions regarding: a) is what I'm experiencing considered normal for granitic sand? b) can I do something to reduce these effects? c) should I look at adding a stabiliser in (http://www.soilbond.com.au/)? Thanks! Re: Granitic sand / decomposed granite - fixing softness 2Mar 17, 2015 6:47 pm Was it wetted and compacted in layers when it was installed? Sounds like the soft areas need more compacting/topping up so the water runs off a bit rather than sits.. Re: Granitic sand / decomposed granite - fixing softness 3Mar 18, 2015 11:18 am It was compacted in 2 layers but was not wetted. The soft areas were certainly no more or less compacted than other areas. I get what you mean about the water running off rather than sitting but the granitic sand is inherently permeable so despite being hard in its dry state, water will always penetrate it. 0 9794 I'll look into different shower heads and ask the plumber about some engineering and see what he says.
