Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Feb 17, 2015 8:24 am Hi All, I live on a sloped property consisting of 3 terraces. The lowest terraces is quite a dump but im looking at cutting it back a few meters and building s retaining wall. The current slops has plenty of broken shale rocks (big and small) and someone suggested making use of this and building a retaining wall using gabion baskets. Are there any major considerations you need to take when building a retaining wall using gabion baskets? Also, where can you purchase decent quality gabion baskets? Regards, Robbie Re: Retaining Wall using gabion baskets 2Feb 17, 2015 4:09 pm There are two sorts of gabions: The cheaper but still adequate gabbions that have a lighter mesh which is flexible. These don't look as good as: A heavier mesh such as the ones from this company http://www.gabion1.com.au/ which are better at retaining its shape. With Gabions you are building a 'Low Skill' drystone wall NOT a No Skill' wall. Just tipping the stone in won't give the best results, the stone should be stacked in the gabion leaving the minimum voids. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Oh and prices for the rock whilst you are at it (please) Re: Retaining Wall using gabion baskets 5Jun 17, 2015 9:02 pm By using a lower gauge steel (such as 3mm), the baskets can tend to "bulge" if stacked more than 1 level high. The steel struggles to hold the rock/stone in a form the basket was meant to. I'd suggest looking at a minimum of 4mm for single storey stacking and if going more than 1 basket on top of another, go with 5mm to be safe. There are some good options available at www.gabionbasketsmelbourne.com.au if in Vic or www.gabionbasketsqueensland.com if in QLD. Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that.
