I have two Foxtail palms, both are around 18 years old, one has a 4 metre high trunk and is in the front garden and the other has a 2 metre high trunk and is in the back garden. The taller one has been producing lots of seed bunches with the small seeds falling to the ground, after awhile it became apparent that the seed flowers had not been pollinated, also I didn't have a clew on how big the seeds became.
Over the weekend I seen a large (40mm dia) red fruit on the ground need the Foxtail in the back garden, which I immediately thought it was the fruit from a native apple tree that is nearby, but to my amazement I discovered it was from the Foxtail which still had some of the red fruit/seeds on the palm. I collected 65 fruit/seeds. I hummed and erred about leaving them where they are and let nature take its course or plant them out in rich garden bed soil which is what I opted to do. Later on in the evening I went online to have a read on the seeds to which was being suggested like removing the flesh and roughing up the surface of the seed. Iām thinking that in nature, apart from the flesh rotting or eaten off that there would be nobody out there roughing up the seed in order for it to germinate. I thought what a load of poop. I've left the seeds where I planted them, I guess time will tell.
