My 80sqm lawn is stuffed.
4-5 months ago I prepared the soil properly- rotary hoed and 50mm of sandy loom.
My mistake was to sow emerald kikuyu with a mother crop.
The emerald kikuyu never emerged. All that grew was the mother crop which is essentially a weed. I'm sure I got weeds from the sandy loom also.
So now all I have is patches of mother crop, god knows what it is but it can grow 30cm a week when it rains!
At the end of summer, I plan to kill all the 'grass' (mother crop weed).
I don't really care what it is as long as it's green and doesn't grown 30cm a week.
Questions-
Should I try to oversow it with another grass that will hopefully take over or just plant Sir Walter Buffalo?
If re-sow, should I apply weed killer all the existing grass weed? What grass seed would you recommend. As I said, I don't really care what grass it is, as long as it's not weeds or grows super fast it needs constant mowing.
If Sir Walter Buffalo, I will weed kill all the existing grass. After the grass is dead and I pull out any chunks, can I just put some Sir Walter Buffalo on top, water well and hope that it grows? The soil isn't rock hard. Or will I have no hope and need to prepare it again?
If i need to prepare it again (rotary hoed and fresh soil) I won't bother with instant turf and just sow it again.
I'll post a photo.. it's a pathetic excuse for a lawn, and a great disappointment to me after all my hard work preparing the soil properly.
