Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 19, 2015 12:02 pm Hi all, I am starting to investigate in plants for our new home. I want to get a few palm trees and wondering what recommendations people have. 1) Must not drop seeds (like the cocous palm) 2) After a range of short, tall, wide, bushy - what looks good together? (anyone have any pics of theirs?) 3) Sandy soil in NSW Cheers! Re: Palm tree recommendations 3Jan 26, 2015 2:38 pm I can't think of any palms that don't produce seeds but most are small and can be cut as seeds emerge, try googling Kentia, dwarf Canary Island date palm, fox tail Palm, date palm, cabbage palm, Cuban royal palm, golden cane palm, triangle palm, lord Howe Island palm (there's a few diff types)),bangalow palm, Alexander palm Also good to know some palms are self cleaning and others are not. Avoid travellers palms Re: Palm tree recommendations 4Feb 02, 2015 9:19 am Saying you are in NSW also doesn't tell us much. Are you coastal, northern temperate and no frosts, inland ? Some palms can't take any frosts at all, others are reasonably tolerant. Stewie Re: Palm tree recommendations 6Feb 02, 2015 9:22 pm Any of the above will be fine then. We are 1.2km from the coast and never get frosts. All ours are doing great. Even though the 12 year old Bangalows and Cocos ( they were free ) are mature trees I still give them a decent watering once a week if its hot weather and fertiliser a few times a year. The Dwarf Date palms same and our Kentia ( slow growing but the best looking of the bunch ) I give a bit more water to as it is in a more exposed position. Stewie Re: Palm tree recommendations 7Mar 07, 2015 12:17 pm I've been researching palms too as I want hem in my garden. I spoke to a lady up the street who has Bangalows and Alexandras. Both are self cleaning (drop fronds when dead). They look similar (beautiful looking things) except Alexandra fronds are a silvery/grey-green underneath. She specifically recommended the Bangalo for being tidy (seed drops) "dont choose the Alexandra they drop seeds everywhere, the Bangalo doesn't -- get Bangalos". Too late for us -- I'd already bought four Alexandra's which are growing like crazy in pots. I'm happy, they look great and will be even bigger when we're ready to plant hem. Re: Palm tree recommendations 8Mar 07, 2015 2:16 pm The Alexandras are a nice looking palm - similar to the Bangalows. If you have parrots around, they may take a shine to the seeds they produce - thus solving your problem. We get a few cockatoos that have taken a liking to the Bangalow seeds. Stewie Hello. I just bought a few acres in Habana, Mackay, and my horses seem to love hanging around under this tree. I would like to name the paddock after this tree. Can… 0 9528 Fellow Perth dweller. Looks like pruns nigra. It's a dark leaf flowering plum. Doesn't get massive and is easily trimmed deciduous tree. Very popular in small gardens in Perth 7 2759 |
