Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 12, 2015 3:02 pm Hi guys, I have palmetto buffalo grass. Everytime prior mowing, I have to go through them and cut the stolons with secateur. They are so visible because the grow on top. Without cutting them off, my mower will scrape them and they will turn brown. I think they are quite invasive. Still better than kikuyu because they are on the top ground not under ground. Anything I can do to make it produce less stolons? At some part of my backyard, I have palmetto that grow up to 20 cm tall.. Partly cause I didn't mow them regular enough. I can't agree that this palmetto is low maintenance. For me, low maintenance means mowing once a month Cheers, Re: too many palmetto stolons 2Jan 12, 2015 11:06 pm Check; http://www.softleafbuffalograss.com.au/ ... o-lawn.php Happens to all buffalo not just a palmetto thing. Lay off the water and fertiliser to slow it down. Not much you can do if its raining a lot though. Re: too many palmetto stolons 3Jan 13, 2015 10:33 am I haven't use any kind of fertiliser at all. The only time I use *booster* is when I was establishing the lawn. I grow them from plugs then follow by Molasses, seasol, + power feed back in 2013. I only water them when there is heat wave in Melbourne. Oh well, I guess that how the grass is. My regime of taking care the 27 sqm: * cutting up the stolons. * line trimming the edge. * mowing. * cutting the stolons scraped by the mowing if any. takes me about 30-40 mins. Re: too many palmetto stolons 4Jan 13, 2015 3:04 pm Fair enough.. Thats buffalo grass for ya, dont blame the brand they are basically all the same. Buffalo is just thatchy and spongey. You wouldn't have much of a turfed area if it was only mowed once a month.. Grass needs to be mowed to thicken up and grow laterally. Mowing cuts down the weeds. The more you mow the better the grass.. I would never build with Fowler homes. I built with them in 2021 and till date maintenance issues are pending.
