Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Dec 21, 2014 8:15 pm Hi everyone I got Palmetto blend turf installed last Wednesday after having some major landscaping work finished. 120m2 of it in the backyard. I got 150-200mm of clay removed and then put gypsum and organic soil around. This is in South west Sydney. The installers basically spread all the organic soil around the backyard and just levelled it off by hand using rake things. A bobcat was running over the yard dumping the turf around but no compacting or rolling was done before laying the turf. Then afterwards again no compacting or rolling was done of the finished turf. Is this normal? Or should they have done this? I've noticed when I walk on the turf now it is quite squishy still and lumpy in places. Will that even out as the turf settles? Or should I be doing something now to try and rectify this? I was thinking maybe I should hire a plate compactor and go around the whole yard to try and level out the turf but I don't know if this is right to do it over the top of the turf after it has been laid, or given it has already been 5-6 days since it was laid if it is too late? I have been watering it twice a day for ~15 mins. Last thing I want is to be left with a lumpy lawn after spending so much fixing drainage issues in the backyard. Re: Lumpy Turf...install questions 2Dec 22, 2014 9:06 am When I seeded a lawn it had sort of lumps etc - ie not flat - but this all came good. Usually you'd rip/dig it etc and level it - get out the crap - and I'd always add top soil. Level this and lay turf - AFTER installing water system. I'm never sure why people spend so much on the turf then let the watering system go - the thing that might mean the lawn stay green/healthy - and is always fairly cheap at the start point. I'd have thought if you have turf laid - and we have a few times - then it should be pretty level. I wouldn't be walking on it too much if its just gone in. It will settle too - and you do need to water it in - NOT overwater. But - ours was always pretty level at the start. Maybe ask them ? It might need some work ? Re: Lumpy Turf...install questions 3Jan 01, 2015 9:01 am New soil is 'fluffy'. Professionals would normally level the base, compact, re-level and often compact again. That's what rollers are for, there is no excuse for a professional to not have a roller. You shouldn't be walking on newly laid turf as this can cause divots as well as creating air pockets that can kill the roots. What's done is done...just stay off it and wait until next Spring before considering a light top dressing over problem areas before it rains. 3in1 Supadiverta.
