Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 22, 2014 2:26 pm Hi guys, I have searched and read through all 28 pages of Fu grass laying. I understand all the terms and what is required. I do have 1 question though, is it a requirement to put Round UP over all grass before removing it to install the new grass. Or Could I just rotary hoe and remove the grass instead of possibly wrecking the soil using round up? As I said, I have read through it but noone asked this exact question. Thanks, chad Re: installing new lawn. 2Nov 22, 2014 4:15 pm Its best to put round up on, and leave for a couple of weeks, as this is the best way to ensure that the weeds are dead and won't come through. One spray of Roundup won't wreck your soil. (any that doesn't touch a growing plant losses effectiveness very quickly) The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: installing new lawn. 3Nov 22, 2014 8:41 pm I'd suggest a two stage process. Roundup existing and wait for it to start yellowing Rotary hoe it and leave for a few weeks. You will be surprised to see how much regrows. Then roundup again. I had my block demo and went and poisoned all the grass so I didn't have to mow it. The builder did a site cut, levelled out a bit and now the weeds and grass are all coming back. I'm going to have to hit it all again because I don't want it when I move in. Re: installing new lawn. 4Nov 23, 2014 8:47 am Thank you both, so definitely hit it with round up at least once. Unfortunately I will be hiring a Rotary Hoe, so I only want to hire it once.. Though I do want to do a proper job and not half a$$ it. Any other small tips you could recommend before I start? installing new lawn. 5Nov 23, 2014 9:26 am What type of soil? If it's clayish add gypsum before you hoe it. It will help break down the clay. Be it known clay is very nutrient rich but in its natural state is near useless to plants. Gypsum helps break it down and release the nutrients. Re: installing new lawn. 6Nov 23, 2014 7:02 pm Hi CrazyK, Thank you, I believe it is Clay, so will be adding Gypsum + 15% sand and 80% Certified organic compost. and the rest gypsum to help assist break it down a little, though as you said, it is healthy to have some clay to assist in keeping the water, unlike sand where it drains away (Perths issue). Re: installing new lawn. 8Nov 29, 2014 9:52 am Hey Chad My opinion would be not to bother with the round up just hoe or dingo the hell out of it! Your going to kill the grass or hoe it back in rite, then bring in more soil which no doubt will have weed seeds in it! Plus after the new lawn goes down you will still have weeds popping through, like fu says, you won't stop weeds just deal with them out when they get big enough. What type of turf are you looking at?? Regards TU. Ask yourself if the insurance company will be aware of the Reno. 4 7360 Hi everyone!
