Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 16, 2014 8:53 pm G'day people , I'm in the process of starting work on the new house and have come to the short side of the house , I'm thinking of pebbles and a stepping paver walkway, the area from wall to fence is 1.5mtrs . At the moment it's a boggy clay mess so I'm wondering what's needed to raise the height and level it whilst making it hard? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ There's also 2 drain pipes poking up I need to fit drains too , any recommendations and/or pictures of your area would be great thanks Joel Re: What have you done down the side of your house ? 2Nov 18, 2014 8:21 pm Hi What you describe as your proposed plan is almost exactly what my in laws did, it looked good, it stayed looking tidy and easy for them for manage. I'm not that tall and did find the stepping stones too far apart. Not sure about the technical stuff. As for us, we're going to put down turf, probably some pavers down the middle to help avoid it wearing down and palmy/ferny things alongside the neighbours wall so it's something green to look out on and they really need no maintenance, it's a wonder they even survived with our care to be honest. However we've got more space than you've got, probably more like 3 metres so sun is less of an issue. Good luck, it's not easy is it. Monster ps like you're name, that's what we named our son! Re: What have you done down the side of your house ? 3Nov 18, 2014 9:05 pm Your area looks similar in size to ours. We only go down there to pick up doggy dos. We had white pebbles and stepping stones down the side of our first build and they were too far apart so this time I asked them to put them closer together. Our landscaper recommended this as a cheap solution-paving stones and blue metal. http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s507/grumblebum54/Landing_zpsd3bafed1.jpg http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s507/grumblebum54/079-steppingstones_zps3194ff75.jpg Regards, Grumbles Re: What have you done down the side of your house ? 5Nov 19, 2014 9:11 pm grumblebum54 Your area looks similar in size to ours. Re: What have you done down the side of your house ? 6Nov 19, 2014 9:18 pm Thanks for the replies people , much appreciated ! Monster , congrats on the boy , you chose a good name ! Grumblebum , that's pretty much what I was looking for , something cheap and easy but still looks good . CC101 , do u happen to have any pics of the paved area , it's something I'd consider . Tganks Re: What have you done down the side of your house ? 8Nov 20, 2014 9:14 pm Hi poohbear A local bloke did all the outside work around our place and he bought everything from a wholesale nursery so I don’t know the exact cost but I can remember him saying the pavers were less than $2 each. I think you could do it yourself for around $200. They had to dig out a lot of dirt on the top side of the house so used that to level the bottom side. They compacted the dirt then just laid the pavers into the dirt a little bit then spread the 5mm blue metal. We asked should the pavers be in concrete and he said don’t worry, they won’t move and they haven’t. Does weed become an issue under those pebbles? or could you put something underneath it to prevent it? i'm just thinking between concreting the whole thing or making it a bit more interesting like yours. Re: What have you done down the side of your house ? 10Nov 21, 2014 11:40 am Get the occasional weed but not enough to waste money on plastic lining. When the dog digs and makes a mess we just rake the stones back in place. Very nice pathway, grumblebum54! We'd like to do something similar to the side of our house too and I'm wondering for your path, would you know how much blue metal was used? I think the soil place near me sells them in quantities like 1 trailer load, 1m3, 2m3 etc etc. Cheers Our Build Thread: The "Extended" Marina by Visionone Homes Our Inspirations: Frank Lloyd Wright | Houzz Re: What have you done down the side of your house ? 12Nov 21, 2014 1:06 pm Hi Joesfish2, If you are on clay you need to make sure water doesn't seep into your foundations so you need to either concrete or put builder's plastic under any pebbles and pavers. You also need to think carefully about how far you raise the height - you can't go higher than 75mm below your weepholes or you will have damp issues inside the wall cavity. You do have drainage outlets so you can make use of these if you concrete by having the concrete sloped to direct runoff into the drains. Re: What have you done down the side of your house ? 13Nov 21, 2014 7:05 pm Drainage was my next problem Liliana , I plan on staying under the 75 mm below the weep holes . My budget is the biggest problem hence why I'm looking to stones/pavers over cement . Just gotta work out the best way to do the drainage. The 2 scoops (1 full trailer) will do roughly 14-15m2. The picture I showed you in the other thread was approx 8m2 of stones and we only got half a trailer (1 scoop) and we are only just short...need to get a couple bags to top it up! So if you go by 14m2 for full trailer or 7m2 for half trailer you should be spot on! Re: What have you done down the side of your house ? 15Nov 22, 2014 3:51 pm Hi Hootie Where we buy our supplies they sell by the tonne. We recently bought some 20mm blue metal and it cost $47 a tonne. What you see in the photo is 5mm so it would cost a few dollars more for the finer grade. They told us a box trailer holds about half a tonne. I would estimate the landscapers used between 1.5 and 2 tonnes down the side of our place.
