Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 09, 2014 9:04 pm G'day people , I've started the backyard turf project and need a bit of advice ! It is pretty much solid clay so I got some shredded cow manure and gypsum spread over the yard then had a bobcat rip up the clay and then rotary hoe the area . I'm now spreading sandy loam/lawn mix and am wondering how to go about it , do I wet it before rolling it with a roller to compact it or do I roll it dry ? Cheers Re: Levelling topsoil/turf underlay 3Jan 20, 2015 9:12 pm Hit it with the sprinkler a few times and it will naturally compact. Then roll dry as Pauly said. A dump of rain is the ideal.
