Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 09, 2014 2:51 pm I have very little room between my bedroom and bathroom(clear glass) windows and my fence. Probably about a metre. its the east fence so will get very little sun. I have quite a big area to cover - probably 7metres wide. Do I have enough room for a vertical garden? even if I put in shade loving plants is it likely to grow? do they look terrible after a while? what sort of system is the best to put in? Thanks for any help Re: Vertical Garden advice 2Nov 11, 2014 11:29 am The vertical gardens I've seen both have frames and containers that stick out probably 200mm from the wall they are mounted on. Depending on what sort of plant you are going to use they would stick out around another 100-150mm. All up your vertical garden is likely to protrude from your fence another 300-350mm. Doable but I wouldn't want to be carrying anything large down your side path. I also wouldn't be doing the whole fence just what is in front of your windows plus another 500-600mm each side so when you look out you have a nice green wall. We're thinking of doing something similar. Go online and see what varieties people are using or go see your local nursery. Most have these as features now. I have been online and found some info but would love to know anyone who has had one going for a while now and if it seems to be working Re: Vertical Garden advice 4Nov 11, 2014 1:44 pm Like any garden you will need to do some maintenance on the plants - watering, fertilising, pruning, weeding etc. I doubt any of them would be set it and forget it types. I see a few that use ferns and succulents a lot. Some also that are entirely herb based. Stewie Re: Vertical Garden advice 5Nov 11, 2014 4:01 pm This idea is a bit out there but my mum did it for a bathroom window that got no sun in anyway. She put a planter box outside the window and put in a large fake palm that was uv treated. Cost about $150 bucks and the view is of a nice green plant that never needs maintenance. Re: Vertical Garden advice 6Nov 11, 2014 6:50 pm Not as out there as you think joannek. I've seen some fantastic floral displays and potted plants in offices that look 100% the genuine thing. It's not until you get real close that you find that they are indeed fakes. Low maintenance for sure. For those that don't have green thumb they would be a handy choice. Stewie Re: Vertical Garden advice 7Nov 11, 2014 6:54 pm I think the real thing is preferable but in difficult spots where there is no sun or you need something quickly for privacy or aesthetics, it's a great option. Re: Vertical Garden advice 8Nov 11, 2014 9:53 pm I'm using the Atlantis modular system, and seem to be working fine. Choice of plants is important; some didn't work so well, and had to be replaced (but easy as it was modular). Be aware it is heavy, especially wet; we had to put in a solid frame to hold ours. Thanks Re: Vertical Garden advice 10Apr 12, 2015 10:46 am I haven't done it yet - we still aren't in the house!! im going to use the system with the black modular plant holders - they are the rigid ones not the soft ones - they look pretty thick and tough so hopefully will last the distance Re: Vertical Garden advice 11Nov 24, 2015 12:53 am i am looking at a vertical garden install, i am leaning towards the Atlantis modules. i will be needing about 4 of the kits! Any reccomendations on plants, the ones lower down will be getting minimal sun during the day. There are several key factors to consider when creating a vertical garden. 1. Pot size. You need to make sure that your plants have enough room to grow and flourish. There are some products on the market that provide such small growing areas that plants just cannot survive. You also need to make sure you don't go too large either as the weight of the pot once planted and watered can be difficult to move and can also flex because of poor structural integrity. 2. Potting mix. Always use a top quality potting mix that has been proven over time. I only use Debco. A good potting mix will retain water and provide the nutrients that your plants need. Also, a good quality potting mix contains less sand and will therefore be lighter! 3. Correct plant selection. This is important. You need to make sure you choose your plants to suit your needs as well as the environment you are placing them into. Hot and sunny positions need different plants to areas that are shady and protected. I have installed in all aspects and have had great results. In a shaded area, ferns, bromeliads, coleus, fittonia and so many other beautiful foliage plants thrive - especially if they get a little sun! 4. Water. Because vertical gardens are basically pot plants, they need water. I tend to advise daily watering a, but for short periods. It is very important that your vertical garden does not dry out! I provide custom built irrigation with every vertical garden I supply. These can be either connected via a tap time, or through an existing automated irrigation system. If you follow these guidelines, there should be no reason why your vertical garden wind be successful. I know I have written a lot here, but I truly believe that you can have great success with the right system. Amir Re: Vertical Garden advice 16Jan 20, 2016 8:10 am Thanks Stewie, I know there are so many conflicting ideas out there that can make decisions difficult. Before I started creating vertical gardens, I carefully researched the various systems out there to see the pros and cons of each. I eventually settled on one system that has a great balance of affordability, ease of use and success rates. I won't say that your plants will never die, but if you follow the right principles, you will have great success!!!
