Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 07, 2014 8:00 pm With our {velveteen} grass? We laid it at the start of November last year, within a month it started dying, in patches. It started changing colour from green to a silvery green, blades were/are shut, then it turned brown. It started as a small patch and quickly covered the whole back yard, within a month the whole grass was practically dead. Hubby asked a 'greenkeeper' friend who said it was a fungus, so he sprayed with whatever was recommended. It has taken nearly a year for the thing to be basically back (still some patches of deadness) to what it was when laid, only for it to again start dying off in exactly the same way as last year.... and almost to the month. This time hubby is insisting its lawn beetle and sprayed something for them. I think its something else, but what, I dont know. Anyone have any idea on what it could be? Thanks Re: What is wrong 3Nov 08, 2014 3:20 pm As we are in WA (sand and clay), we got a heap of soil (not certified organic as didnt know where to purchase it SOR) and dug it in with zeolite and sand remedy. Since we are still getting some wet days/nights it hasnt been watered as regularly as it would be during summer, but has been done when there are a couple of warmer days in a row. I first thought that it wasn't getting water, when it did the same last year, but that was only laid and was still getting daily waterings, I figured it couldnt be that. Hubby 'cored' the lawn a couple of months ago also. The patches are being watered now and still spreading/dying. The first pic in my OP has now doubled in size, after a day. Re: What is wrong 4Nov 08, 2014 4:09 pm Testing for pests is simple, use the Detergent Drench Test- pour a bucket of water with a tablespoon of dish washing detergent in it, over 1sqm of the lawn area and flood it with the hose for a few minutes. The best time is late in the day, watch for 10 minutes to see if anything comes to the surface. If more than 10 hairless caterpillar come out of the lawn (colour range black to grey, green or brown), or more than 25 black beetle per square metre you need to treat the area with the correct remedy. During autumn and winter you need to keep the lawn length a bit longer for velveteen. This helps sunlight being absorbed more readily by the leaves during the colder months. When we had velveteen, we vertimowed it once to prevent thatching, which can also cause a lot of problems- lack of water absorption for one- and dying off. But I've never seen the silvery dying patches you have there. If all else fails, go back to the lawn farm and ask them about it...
