Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 06, 2014 7:56 pm Hi all, I'd like some advice on laying Lilydale Toppings in my backyard. My small garden (90-odd m2) is south facing and at the back of a sloping block; meaning that it gets a little boggy and doesn't get enough sun for a decent lawn. I've cleared the site and I'm starting from scratch! The design I've put together has a reasonable sized grassed area (where the garden gets sun) and a couple of areas with bark chips all connected via paths in lilydale toppings. The toppings will cover approx. half of the area. Ok, so given the slight drainage issue I have in the garden, I've been recommended by a couple of landscaping supplies places to lay the lilydale toppings on top of a compacted bed of crushed rock/road base or fine scoria to improve stability and drainage. I've got no idea which base material to use, and no idea how thick the layers (base and lilydale) should be. Any ideas? Anyone had success with a base layer of scoria to improve/maintain drainage? I'm also on a pretty strict budget so I'd like to do this myself. Based on, for instance, 6m3 of material to lay is it reasonable to do this myself over a couple of weekends?
