Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 28, 2014 2:21 pm Hi Guys, I need some suggestions on how to tackle what seems the monumental task of fixing up our backyard/front yard. The facts are: 1) We have a old paving, and pergola (in the back yard) that are going to be removed (we are thinking of re using the paving elsewhere). 2) We will need a new pergola, and want to grass some of the area where the old brick paving was. 3) We have no reticulation, we would like to put this in. 4) The front yard needs new grass and a general tidy up (and to be included in the reticulation plans). 5) Garden beds need soil and plants etc (and to be included in the reticulation plans). Now I have read the soil laying prep and am going to go down that path. I am how ever over awed at where to start. Do I retic prior to soil prep, do I soil prep prior to retic? Do I rip up the pavers, kill the weeds, soil prep, retic, lay grass? The thing is I want to get started, but I am mindful of not wanting to lay new grass during the WA summer? Should I worry about this? Can I soil prep the garden beds now in anticipation for retic? Do we worry about getting the bore (not working, not sure why) up and running? Or do the retic off the mains? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Being a novice some form of "mud map" would be great. I know once we start it should take care of it's self (with hard work) it's the starting point that is stopping us. Re: Motivation and guidance needed 2Nov 04, 2014 12:22 pm Grr I just wrote a long post in response and lost it. The short answer: Map out your new garden plan. here's some useful links. http://www.smartdraw.com/software/lands ... ftware.htm http://www.burkesbackyard.com.au/fact-s ... -backyard/ I would retic before laying the lawn in a Perth summer, you will need it straight away! Also read Fu Manchu's soil prep articles here on the forum. Re: Motivation and guidance needed 3Nov 06, 2014 6:22 pm The way I would do it: 1. Plan it out 2. Do your hardscaping first, i.e. paving, pergolas, retaining, raised garden beds as required 3. Do the soil prep before retic so if your area is large you can hire a machine to dig/mix the nutrients in without worrying about hitting retic pipes 4. Do the retic 5. Add plants and lawn Re: Motivation and guidance needed 4Nov 06, 2014 7:27 pm Thanks dukecaddy. Good tip about doing the retic after the soil prep.
