Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 19, 2014 9:24 pm Hi all, Got a little dilemma, Clarendon have excavated my land and i'm going to have to build retaining walls (aprox 400mm). Clarendon have not excavated to the boundary which means i still need to excavate about 1'm on the one side. My neighbor on that side has completed his place and wants to add his fencing and paving. If i agree to fence that side, how close could i build the retaining wall to the fence? Should add that Clarendon will only let me do my retaining wall after handover. Re: Is it possible to build a retaining wall after fencing 3Oct 20, 2014 7:39 am I believe there is a set distance you can do a wall. But - under my understanding - a retaining wall is not a fence. So - it might be best to talk to the neighbour and work out a solution - amicably ... The fence belongs to you both - not just one of you. Re: Is it possible to build a retaining wall after fencing 4Oct 20, 2014 10:31 am If the neighbour won't wait (so you could build the fence on top of the retaining wall) I would build the wall around 500mm from the fence line so you don't disturb the fence foundations and you can have some planting in front of the fence. Re: Is it possible to build a retaining wall after fencing 5Oct 20, 2014 8:05 pm @ Saint mike, I have suggested a temporary fence and even paying for the fence if he was will to wait 2.5 months. Clarendon have stated that they should have my brick work done by Xmas and they would be willing to let me do the retaining wall and fence. My neighbor moves in two weeks and wants the security of the fence. Maybe they should have moved to a compound:-) @bashworth, might just have to consider that option thanks. Will send some photo's soon. I'm going to build the retaining wall half a meter from the fence and turn it in to a garden. Started pricing the retaining wall and its not looking cheap. Re: Is it possible to build a retaining wall after fencing 10Oct 23, 2014 8:44 pm Hi CC101, I'm leaning towards concrete sleepers on the sides and masonry on the back. Treated timber is what most of my neighbors have gone with but i find although cheaper, it never looks good after a few years. What are you considering? Re: Is it possible to build a retaining wall after fencing 12Oct 24, 2014 9:27 am deldot8 Thanks for all the comments. I'm going to build the retaining wall half a meter from the fence and turn it in to a garden. Started pricing the retaining wall and its not looking cheap. if only 400mm high it shouldnt cost too much and is easy to do yourself.. you're right about CCA pine or hardwood being cheapest option, ive done this before and regretted it could never get it looking really neat, if i ever leaned that way the old uprights and sleeper style i would use the concrete sleepers that slot into the metal post/supports. because your only going up 400mm you only need to go down 600mm can easy dig the hole then you drop the metal supports in and concrete them, make sure your spacing is 100% accurate and they all line up perfectally then when dry you just slide the sleepers in you will only need two high at 400mm.. see here: http://www.aussieconcreteproducts.com.a ... -sleepers/ http://www.aussieconcreteproducts.com.a ... -POSTS.pdf Re: Is it possible to build a retaining wall after fencing 13Oct 24, 2014 9:31 am You can get concrete sleepers that look like the textured masonry blocks too (and caps that go on the posts. Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that. The acid will provide for required bond key with new concrete. 1 36964 |
