Can't think of the name - but might be worth a look. On one of those channels after Sky News. Re: ideas for a tropical pool landscape 3Jan 01, 2015 1:19 pm thanks saint mike will try and see if i can find it. i do not have foxtel but may find it on the computer. i am getting a shade sail across the pool about half the pool. also looking at plants that will not grow too big to stop our view. here is a pic of the pool area sorry not really good Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: ideas for a tropical pool landscape 5Jan 03, 2015 4:26 am lots of great ideas thee thanks treeseachanger Re: ideas for a tropical pool landscape 6Jan 03, 2015 5:08 pm Also - maybe a "roll-in" sail/awning/vergola - if you can ? I feel you need it in summer - but not in winter. Pool can get quite warm in summer - but you need sun in winter. Re: ideas for a tropical pool landscape 7Jan 03, 2015 6:17 pm thanks saint mike . yes it gets very hot. have ordered a shade sail that will go about half of pool. and also looking at solar heating as well. will post pics when sail is installed . hopefully by end of Jan. Re: ideas for a tropical pool landscape 8Jan 04, 2015 10:55 am Apart from looking at links like the one Treeseachanger gave , you should start with your climate zone and what the temperature variations are. That'll determine to a large degree what plants you can and cannot use around the pool. Stewie Re: ideas for a tropical pool landscape 9Jan 04, 2015 7:05 pm thanks stewie will do. i do get high winds we are a bit exposed to elements due to being on the hill. Also can get hot. thinking also as the pool is salt water to look at plants that are salt tolerant. i am also only about 5kms to beach. Re: ideas for a tropical pool landscape 10Jan 04, 2015 7:21 pm Just a thought, as I don't know your climate zone...Pandanus are salt tolerant and hardy...they grow right on the beach in some places. Re: ideas for a tropical pool landscape 11Jan 04, 2015 8:54 pm 5km's . Gee we're only 1.2 km's and I wouldn't even bother with salt tolerant plants ( unless they suited our landscaping of course ). I'd only consider them if you were less than 500 - 750m away from the beach. Stewie Re: ideas for a tropical pool landscape 12Jan 12, 2015 2:20 pm thanks stewie i was thinking of salt tolerant because of the salt water pool i have thanks treechanger will look at that. Re: ideas for a tropical pool landscape 13Jan 12, 2015 4:15 pm Stewie's right. The problems you have with a salt water pool is the same for any pool...heat and glare off the water and the pool chemicals evaporating. Try cannas as well, ideal for colour, they are very hardy and there are ones with colour foliage as well as the lovely flower. If you look at any Balinese style or general tropical garden, natural timber features a lot. I'd be looking at some timber panelling to hide your Colorbond fences with plants and shrubs in front. I have lots of photos of tropical gardens. A lot of them gleaned from Houzz. Stewie Re: ideas for a tropical pool landscape 15Jan 13, 2015 3:37 am thank you stewie and treeschanger you have both helped alot. i have a qoute coming for to rock walls to try and level the land a bit before i start planting and look at other things really love the cannas and timber ideas Re: ideas for a tropical pool landscape 17Jan 18, 2015 4:08 am thanks stewie the pics were great lots of ideas. much appreciated thanks managed to score some cheap retaining wall blocks called hunterstone. and classing myself as sons apprentice. we started at the bottom and have now completed one corse of blocks. today as the concrete has had time to set our next task is finishing bottom retaining wall. the ag pipe etc before commencing second wall then adding a box drainage system at the top to drain away excess water from the splashing etc of pool, then in a few weekends completing second wall adding a paved area for a very large buddha to sit, then from the ideas from stewie and treeschanger thanks guys, planting etc. so may take a few weekends but will get there. Re: ideas for a tropical pool landscape 18Jan 20, 2015 9:43 am Possibly The Pool Master on Discovery Channel. I've seen two episodes. In one he built a 'natural pool' (swimming pond) on a cliff edge in the mountains. Used heavy machinery to pull large boulders from the surrounding cliffs to create the 'natural pool'! The other was an overview of very grand pool designs - think grottos, scuba diving caves, slides through tunnels, swim-up bars, flame features in pool, etc. The flame feature was made by bubbling propane through the water, and igniting it, if I recall correctly. Probably not easy or sensible to get approval for... Good show to watch for ideas though.
