Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Sep 21, 2014 12:40 pm Hi guys, I have a 2 year old lawn (Sir Walter Buffalo), it's always been pretty health, with the usual shut down over winter. With this winter just gone however, I think that I may have done some damage. I mowed it, however I think I used my summer setting instead of the usual higher level that I do during winter. Not long after, we had some pretty poor weather, including frosts and a few downpours of hail. Following this, the lawn appears to have suffered in places, this is somewhat exacerbated by my dog (Great Dane) putting some walking tracks into it. I've fenced off some areas, but would appreciate some advice as to what I might be able to do to air in the repair, and possibly whether the lawn might need replacing in some areas. I've included some photos below: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/168 ... G_5425.JPG https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/168 ... G_5426.JPG https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/168 ... Dave Re: Buffalo lawn repair - help please 5Sep 21, 2014 9:29 pm Thanks for that. I'll give it at go. For the barer batches, do you think that a top dress will help? Also, where do you buy your molasses from? Re: Buffalo lawn repair - help please 6Sep 21, 2014 9:34 pm Thanks guys, where do you normally buy your molasses from? I'm in Melbourne, btw. Re: Buffalo lawn repair - help please 7Sep 21, 2014 11:24 pm Yeah a top dress wouldn't hurt. I get my molasses from Greensborough Grain Store. $10 for a 5 litre bucket. I mix molasses, soluble potash, seasol and powerfeed in an empty 2 litre seasol spray container. Re: Buffalo lawn repair - help please 9Sep 30, 2014 8:48 am Krilnik Yeah a top dress wouldn't hurt. Hi Just wondering what quantity of each product do you put into the 2 litre seasol spray container? Do you also add any water to mix it up before you connect it up to the hose? Also i picked up a 25kg tub of molasses from epping E & A Salce - Think it was $20.00 Re: Buffalo lawn repair - help please 10Oct 01, 2014 10:49 am That's exactly the same molasses I use. In an empty Seasol 2 litre spray container: - Add about a cm or two (or three) of molasses. Enough to cover the bottom of the container about a few cm deep. Sometimes I may add up to about 5cm. Whatever feels right. Add a little hot water, shake vigorously. - 250ml of powerfeed - 500ml of Seasol - I also add a few teaspoons of soluble potash to the mix. - Top up with cold water. - Spray away. Re: Buffalo lawn repair - help please 11Oct 01, 2014 11:00 am Actually, come to think of it I don't use Seasol anymore. I now use this: http://ecoorganicgarden.com.au/products ... o-seaweed/ Same thing, just cheaper. Re: Buffalo lawn repair - help please 12Nov 15, 2014 6:32 pm Looks like mine does in the places that were shaded and stayed wet a lot in winter. I think mine is a fungus and maybe yours is too. They say you can only fertilise for a fungus and hope it recovers. There isn't any spray on fungicide you can buy in Bunnings for large areas in Australia. You can use Mancozeb in smaller areas. Re: Buffalo lawn repair - help please 13Jan 07, 2015 4:04 pm Howdy all Long time reader, first time poster. My 3 month old Sir Walter Buffalo appears to be suffering from the same or a very (very) similar issue. As Jassy mentioned, fungus is highly probable. 'It' started on the left hand side of my 3x1m lawn patch, and after trimming I found it on the other side. I clip the lawn and bag as it is too small to mow with any type of mower. I (want to) believe this fungal disease has spawned due to watering in the evening. http://s13.postimg.org/v8dsncgw6/PRE_all_lawn.jpg http://s13.postimg.org/oj797bvk6/PRE_two_fungis.jpg http://s13.postimg.org/j3txsmeme/PRE_fungi_close.jpg I applied Mancozeb 4 days back now, and aerated the lawn yesterday in preparation for reinvigorating it. It is a small area (3m^2), so I did this manually. Electric drill and a 14mm bit, each hole approx 8cm from the last. Bit rough though, beats hiring a corer for this patch. Took about 25 minutes and a two beers. I kinda want to do it again (there is a benefit for any one thinking, hey I will do this manually). Most likely will buy some of those aerating thongs and follow Fu Manchu's suggestion to carry a beer at all times. http://s13.postimg.org/rslodsjnq/PRE_fungi_aerated.jpg Took a pH meter to the soil shortly after aerating yesterday, and found it sitting at 4.5 to 5.5 pH. Well below where it needs to be. After leaving the grass aerated for 24 hours until today, I have applied sand over the lawn and core holes (5'ish KG over the whole area) which effectively placed a 2-3mm layer of sand over the entire patch, and changed the appearance of the top soil without filling/mounding/looking like Brighton Le Sands beach here in Sydney. Any who. Next, followed the application instructions on the back of the Dolomite Lime for my loamy soil. Next layer was some Naked Farmer organic soil activator (a bag, applied evenly). Then made a molasses/seasol/wetter combo and applied. Then applied some VitaRich (which as I understand is essentially Seasol +Powerfeed) over the top. I am looking forward to seeing the lawn change over the next few weeks. http://s13.postimg.org/sd0pghcw6/POST_all_lawn.jpg http://s13.postimg.org/skjqz8yh2/POST_two_fungi.jpg http://s13.postimg.org/9fl33896u/POST_fungi_close.jpg PS: the white stains on the lawn are residual from the Mancozeb. I will be applying another dosage first thing Saturday morning (6 days from first dose). PPS: the number one take home point for me is look after your soil first and foremost. Oh, and beer, it does help a lot with these tasks. DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Hi All, Hoping someone might be be to provide some advice on my ceiling that needs repair.
