Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jul 22, 2004 11:19 am I have a back yard that is 20x15m and recently I had the bob cat in to remove some dirt full of prickels in it. We have children so we need some advice on what to do to fill our backyard up with easy to manage plants that won't die in too much heat. We live 1800kms for Perth, Western Australia and the weather here is usally very warm, and the soil in our back yard is also very much like clay. We are desperate for help!! Re: back yard 4Nov 21, 2006 6:00 pm Joseph,
You will need to look into the succulent family as well as the Dracaenas. I would look at planting at least one LARGE non deciduous tree in the yard for shade all year round. Under that tree some seating and possibly a small table for the kids. When the tree grows! I would be looking at the shade aspect more than a pretty back yard. Take notice where the sun hits at the hottest part of the day and grow a line of small trees at that point, along the fence line. Good hardy trees are the Pittosporum and Photinias they are slow growing to start with but when they get going they are off and running! These are very hardy small trees. I too have clay soil, and mine are doing great! Then have a couple of nicely designed gardens with the succulents and Dracaenas. Below is a link about the succulents. http://www.acsgarden.com/article_item.aspx?id=50 Hope this helps.
