He should be fine with piers and bricks between or piers and some other fencing system between as long as he ties them together or makes sure he has a solid base for piers only. I posted only because we were ALL asked for advice and posted the pics because I was asked to. I realise they aren't a fencing example. I wasn't offering that or pretending it was one. Just proving I had done what I said I'd done, as asked to do. Re: Brick front fence construction in WA 25Aug 28, 2014 11:19 pm yes AKB it was. awful. So very sad for the family. From what read and what our friend said there were no rods in the piers. No ties to connect to the base etc etc. horrible. Sadly some of the brickwork done by supposedly accredited building companies in the late 80's- early 90's in the estate we were living in was no better. I watched the house behind us being constructed. The guy who ran the course I did was an Old school serious old bloke. From what we were taught I was seriously freaked out at what I saw being done as supposedly "quality tradies' in the early 80's. I could have/would done better and would NEVER have considered myself good enough to be building homes. What I saw was totally shocking. When we build this time I asked for them to do a style that was pure 80's /90's. "raked" brickwork as I thought it would suit our bricks. I didn't have the heart to explain to our brickie team when we were called in to inspect the brickwork ( in case we didn't know what it really was) that I knew exactly what it was, having learnt to do it as one of the techniques in my course. Our head brickie said he hadn't done it for years. I think he was a bit wary of us as he couldn't figure our how we knew about it as a style. Re: Brick front fence construction in WA 27Aug 29, 2014 7:49 am that might be the case NOW Nemisis but 20+ years ago it was the standard in WA. The piers matched those used in the carport built by my builder so I seriously doubt they were illegal. Do you have anything helpful to contribute to this thread? I've just realised it was you who asked me for photos not the OP and it seems to me you only asked for them so you could rubbish the work. As for whether they are ridiculous or not, that's your personal opinion and I reserve the right to disagree. I think big chunky piers look even uglier and I'm not a fan of thin timber uprights either. My other half doesn't mind them though so that's why we have one in the corner of our alfresco this time round. Ending this now as I thought I was responding with my original comments to the OP as that was all I was asked to do. I'm not saying that is it NOW the standard.
