Still not sure if we want to take the room up in the yard with another tree or put a pool in or landscape!!! Decisions,Decisions.... Re: fruit trees for the garden 22Oct 25, 2014 12:59 pm Pretty easy to grow. They have very shallow roots so the drainage is really important. They don't like too much sun when they are getting established. They are very slow for the first 1-5 years, then they take off. Mine started fruiting (in melbourne) around year 7. Every year I get a few more. First year, 3. Second year, 5. This year I'm hoping for 10 or so. They are so tasty and buttery it is not funny. And grabbing them off the tree is one of life's finest pleasures. And yes, there are possum bite marks in them. They are a possum food source all right! Leaves, fruit, stems! They all died. They were too exposed to strong southerly wind and too close to the beach and salt. I will have to put second attempt on pause until I can find some sheltered spots to try again. For the time being I just have some potted ones behind the house. The little buggers have trimmed ours every year since it was planted and we are yet to see an Avocado! They seem to especially like the flowers and shoots. Time for some netting I think. This last winter they got stuck into my Mango tree and apart from eating the flowers the previous summer, this year they stripped the bark off large sections of the stems which meant those parts of the tree died.
