Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design Re: Diy garden or Pro? 2Jun 02, 2014 4:41 pm Landscaping is hard labour - but doing it yourself will look just as great as getting a pro. Just keep in mind it is hard yakka and do your research Re: Diy garden or Pro? 4Jun 02, 2014 5:10 pm Depends on what you want, your level of skill to DIY and also the "canvas" (in terms of soil, slope, aspect etc) you have to deal with. I personally find DIY to be very rewarding (albeit hard work) but if you want your landscape finished quickly then maybe a landscaper is the go. As others have said, cost will also be a determining factor - I have a friend who spent $50k on what I think is fairly "standard" looking landscaping of a normal sized suburban block. Another option is to have a professional develop a landscape plan for you and then actually implement it yourself, maybe paying someone to put in the "hard" landscaping (plater boxes, decking etc) first. Re: Diy garden or Pro? 5Jun 03, 2014 1:57 am Thanks, we got 3 companies to come in and discuss with them, and the plans will be free of charge. This way we got some initial help. But also the other thing that worries me is the watering system, if we succeed alone or not. plus the downwards slope of our plot, maybe the soil will not be placed well enough... I think that you can understand a house when is professionally finished from the looks and how tide it.is... Re: Diy garden or Pro? 6Jun 03, 2014 9:59 am Watering system is not hard - just time consuming. Maybe go to a Bunnings "How To" course. But - they have pamphlets which explain how to do it. Make sure you sit and plan it - on paper - and get enough bits and pieces. It is not hard. Tips - get the little gadget that makes the holes - DON'T use a knife. Use hot water to soften the plastic tubing when you put things together - it will harden up after. But it makes it much easier. Lay your piping out the night before to get it "straight". Re: Diy garden or Pro? 7Jun 03, 2014 1:15 pm Saint Mike what DIY watering system did you use? Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65085 Re: Diy garden or Pro? 8Jun 03, 2014 1:24 pm Our front garden was landscaped by the developer ... most of it curled up its toes and died so we pulled out all the dead stuff, dug some decent holes and added lots of good soil, compost and other bits and pieces and have had good success ..... it was hard work as we have a lot of clay too but the roses are smelling beautiful now We did the back garden ourselves and that has also turned out pretty good. Good luck with yours! For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Re: Diy garden or Pro? 9Jun 03, 2014 1:41 pm EmyN Saint Mike what DIY watering system did you use? I bought it all from Bunnings - but make sure you buy quality stuff. Cheap may seem good - but it doesn't last. Can't think of brand - maybe a green package ... First step - go in and ask for the brochures. They have them and they explain the whole process. They also have DIY classes but you'd have to ask if any on this subject were coming up. Re: Diy garden or Pro? 10Jun 03, 2014 1:42 pm Oops - also - ensure you get the right ones - ie dribblers, sprays, pop-ups etc. Its why you need to read the material. I couldn't put it all here. Re: Diy garden or Pro? 11Jun 05, 2014 10:04 am We will be DIYing, but enjoy it, and have lots of ideas of what we want to do. A landscaper would be good if you have no idea where to start and what you are after. AFAIK, flashing is a minimum standard.
