Set up the first and last paver to required heights. Set up two string lines slightly wider than these and lay to the lines. I bought several galv steel fencing rails from the local hardware store. These are cheap and straight. 2 of them are used to set up straight & level edges. The third rail is used to screed the bedding sand flat. Re: Laying 400 x 400 pavers down the side of my house 4May 30, 2014 11:19 am I would not have a clue how to 'level' cement between 2 string lines (and I don't really want to use cement). The galc fence rods sound like a good idea, however, what do you use to: 1.) make sure the galv rods do not move 2.) (And this is the cause of my main issue) - How on earth do I make sure the 2 rods are 'level'? what do I use to get the rods to be perfectly level on dirt that has a slight slope? If I could simply get the rods to be 1.) stable, 2.) the right height and 3.) level - I could then simply shovel in the crusher dust, use a screed to level the crusher dust and I am good to go. I am a complete noob at this stuff - so I appreciate peoples help. Luke. Re: Laying 400 x 400 pavers down the side of my house 5May 30, 2014 6:24 pm Steel fencing rails are square hollow steel sections. They are quite stiff & do not bend much. They can be held in position using tent pegs and partially burying in sand. Builders string & a long spirit level will allow you to accurately fix the fence rails in position. Then you shovel in bedding sand in between the 2 rails & screed off using another fence rail. The last time I installed concrete pavers, my enthusiastic 8 year old granddaughter screeded the bedding sand. Whenever she visits, she still inspects the paving. Re: Laying 400 x 400 pavers down the side of my house 6May 30, 2014 11:21 pm Thanks mate for the advice mate. The length Of the area I want to pave is 20m... how many rods should I get? e.g. if I buy 2x 4m rods... after I have Finished the first 4m how do I make Sure where I move the rods to is the exact same level? (I guess buying 4 rods would solve that...or a tape measure) nice memories with your grand daughter hehe Luke Re: Laying 400 x 400 pavers down the side of my house 7May 31, 2014 7:32 pm Quote: if I buy 2x 4m rods... after I have Finished the first 4m how do I make Sure where I move the rods to is the exact same level? (I guess buying 4 rods would solve that...or a tape measure) Laying pavers over 20m. To get a flat straight edge, use builder string. It will need a lot of tension to reduce sag in the middle. I suggest star droppers will be required at each end with a piece of timber in the middle to lift the string up a little to eliminate sag. Once you have screeded the first 4 metres, move the steel RHS sections along for the next 4m using the string line as a guide. In addition you could hammer in pegs/steel rods along the 20m to use as reference markers for the heights in case someone trips over the string!
