Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 May 24, 2014 12:03 am Hi! For the first time, I'm going to get my hands dirty and plant some veggies -They will be in containers. Large pots mostly. -Will be organic methods as far as possible. -Will be sowing now which I know is maybe not optimal- but we have a pretty warm climate - eg tomorrow is 13-29 (Brisbane). -Can find sunny, shady, sheltered spots - whatever needed. Looking at ordering seeds from Eden but happy to buy them from anywhere. Now, I've consulted a book (Organic gardening in Australia - Pauline Pears) for some ideas. Please walk me through choosing some varieties because despite a lot of googleing I am overwhelmed. They suggest a mixed pot, all this crowded into a deep 40cm pot- 1 x tomato reliable tall (not bush) cultivar - wouldn't an indeterminate type take over the pot? What's a good variety? for this purpose? 12 x sugar peas - I assume this means sugarsnap - bush or climbing? 4 x lettuce 'Red Coral', oakleaf or other loose leaf lettuce - Going to get Red Coral 4 x lettuce compact loose leaf lettuce - are some more compact than others? Was just going to pick one - maybe Speckled 4 x salad rocket - just getting standard rocket 6 x compact, variegated nasturtium - does it matter if it's variegated?? Was looking at Jewel mix - it's non trailing, 40cm Was also going to plant some cherry tomatoes in a hanging pot - can any bush variety tumble? To go in more pots, some of the following- Some small carrot variety - Chantenay red cored A variety of small-ish cucumbers if there is one Eggplant - little fingers I know this is a big list but would appreciate any feedback! Especially tomatoes - they are confusing. Re: Please help me choose some veg varieties 2May 24, 2014 7:59 am Not sure about lettuce. We have herbs etc, and lemons - always handy. I did the potato and pumpkin thing many years back - then found it all too much trouble ... Easier to buy at Woolies- and when mine were ready they were cheap as chips at the deli etc. Re lettuce - be careful if you have a dog and use snail bait. It can be deadly. Not sure if you have kids - but if you get them involved it can be a fun family thing. It is fun though and nothing like eating your own tomatoes. Strawberries are good too. Re: Please help me choose some veg varieties 3May 26, 2014 12:21 pm With the relatively humid climate we have here I've found the traditional lettuces and bigger tomatoes hard to grow - they get to nearly maturity and then turn to mush. Carrots and cucumbers similar - we get a nasty grub in them. Rocket though that stuff grows , well like a rocket and cherry toms they grow well. Kids love them because they are bite-sized. Sugar peas grow well in a pot ( bush shaped not climbing ) but they like a little lime added to the pot. There is always this excellent thread by FuManchu... viewtopic.php?f=19&t=17096 Stewie Re: Please help me choose some veg varieties 4Jun 02, 2014 7:40 pm Hi guys, thanks for the tips. We already have herbs going crazy in big pots, so the only herb I planted was dill. Love that stuff. We also have pumpkins growing crazily all over the yard. I hand pollinated some flowers and now have a few pumpkins rapidly growing! I bought seedlings of 2 looseleaf lettuces and bunching onions, which I potted and they are growing. I planted (direct sow) seeds for full size tomato, cherry tomato, cucumber (spacemaster), dill, garlic chives, rocket, little finger and royal chantenay carrots... the cucumber and spinach have sprouted and nothing else yet, but it's only been 7 days and I didn't plant many. This weekend just gone I planted into seedling modules more of all the above plus rocket and marigold. The rocket has already sprouted - you aren't wrong about the rocket Stewie D! These are inside, some under plastic and some in an electric mini greenhouse I bought. Thanks for the tips. No kids Saint Mike but I imagine that would be fun. I'd love to grow strawberries... am I best off buying a plant/runners at a nursery? I have ordered some more seeds including bush peas and snow peas Stewie D, looking forward to it! Re: Please help me choose some veg varieties 5Jun 02, 2014 7:54 pm Just buy a plant for the strawberries, that's what we did and they grew pretty quickly. Nothing like fresh berries off the plants. Just watch out for the slugs and snails - they love 'em. One thing we found grew really well was runner ? beans, the ones you grow around stakes and get up to 2m high. They'd probably grow well in a large pot as long as you kept the water up to them. Stewie Hi VK, I am now retired however I have stood beside over 300 owner builders in the past 18 years that have successfully built their own homes. First of all a building… 10 22670 Thank you so much for the effort. We will use it to talk with builder. We also had idea of building duplex instead and seeking suggest ions. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=106744 11 13835 Thankyou so much 😀 I've decided on White on white for doors and trims, White on white 50% on ceiling and Mt buller for walls. Fingers crossed it will look OK 😀 2 7158 |
