Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 May 21, 2014 6:33 pm Hey Guys So after moving into our new home.. We have about 90-100sq of front lawn land laying with top soil and some weed.. we have sprayed roundup advance on it.. It has no shade.. full sun view. We are just n00b at gardening.. we were looking at laying turf on that area.. Now we saw that artificial turf is quite expensive buy and get it done and also if DYI it needs a lot of equipment and stuff.. So in real turf we were first considering Sir Walter Buffalo becuase its everywhere (Bunnings / Masters etc).. But after some read we are also liking Palmetto Soft Leaf Buffalo and Empire Zoysia (EZ Turf).. Would like greenery and low maintenance if possible.. Don't even know all the terms we read regarding the different turfs.. Our queries are 1) Which of the three would you recommend or any other we missed? 2) Good time to lay right now? Just becuase it has minimal weed at the moment.. and probably soil is bit soft but will have to take a shovel to entire area to loosen it as suggested.. But winter is coming?? 3) Anything else we will need (Shovel , turf, lawn starter fertilizer to lay before laying the turf) ? 4) Cheap place to find that turf (which recommended) in Melbourne? Cost. 5) How much will professional turf install cost? We got a quote for Sir Walter Buffalo with install for approx $30/sqm 6) Anything else to consider, do? Did read excellent posts by Fu and others but we are probably planning to do this (whenever we do) a) Remove weed as much as possible b) Loosen soil by hand & water to moist it (toughest job) c) Spread Lawn Starter d) Lay turf e) Water again Thanks Re: Turf Query for Melbourne 2May 22, 2014 3:48 pm its Did read excellent posts by Fu and others but we are probably planning to do this (whenever we do) a) Remove weed as much as possible b) Loosen soil by hand & water to moist it (toughest job) c) Spread Lawn Starter d) Lay turf e) Water again Thanks If youve read Fu's and other threads, and the above is what youve taken from it, you need to read it again. Not trying to be rude, just trying to highlight to you that youve missed about 80% of the process. Re: Turf Query for Melbourne 4May 22, 2014 4:50 pm im probably at the same situation as you; looking for turf. I'm leaning to Empire Zosia due to lower invasivness, slower growing (no mowing every week) and i like the blade. We have a mix of sun and part shade areas that seems to fit the bill. You'll just have to read as many possible descriptions about the product from the supliers and customers and see fi you can wee dout the inconsistent sales mumbojumo (like when you read on a sellers site a spiecies is non invasive, then in a forum you read that its strangling the neighbors yard lol) Creator of superduperonium, expert at expert things, nobel laureate, can hold my breath for 10 minutes. Re: Turf Query for Melbourne 5Jul 10, 2014 2:14 pm You'll be fine with any of the lawn types, they all look great if looked after. I put down 180 square metres of EZ at my last house in Bris (just moved) and after doing the soil properly it looks great and if you leave it longer it grows so thick I never need to weed it. It still grows fast though and needs regular mowing in summer. My father in law put down a strip of Sir Walter next to his front path and it looks fantastic. Walter can get thatchy though best to keep it short. Re: Turf Query for Melbourne 6Jul 10, 2014 2:23 pm applor You'll be fine with any of the lawn types, they all look great if looked after. I have put 100sqm of Palmetto and been over 5 weeks.. all edges are showing and looks a bit yellow on all edges.. and the green is also not lush.. my neighbours sir walter looks great who laid it 1-2 months before me in Melbourne.. Can give pics if someone can suggest anything.. Have been spraying Seasol every 2 weeks (done twice only) Re: Turf Query for Melbourne 7Jul 10, 2014 4:18 pm applor You'll be fine with any of the lawn types, they all look great if looked after. Edit - the reason im pointing this out is op was asking about the timing also. Not all turf will do well if planted middle of wintwr in melb. Once you hit summer those edges will start to re-grow and the lawn will lush up. Every newly laid turf will have dead edges and patches. Mine had nearly 3 whole squares that died and it took until the next summer for them to grow out and blend in with the rest of the lawn. I would hold off with any more fertilizing until spring when temperatures rise. Just make sure it doesn't dry out (but don't over water) Re: Turf Query for Melbourne 9Jul 11, 2014 12:33 pm Ponzu [Brisbane weather conditions are not even remotely similar to melbourne. True, the weather conditions are quite different but the lawn types he asked about do well in both. And yes sorry - it really isn't a good time to lay turf, obviously Spring will be ideal if the OP can hold off. I have been watering it and leaving it to nature as well.. hopefully they come back in September.. looks dull green and yellow.. putting seasol every fortnight.. not doing any more fertilizer 2 7234 There is no reason why building contract reconciliation cannot be done prior to handover, if the builder won't do it get someone to do it for you.
