Hi all....particularly "neverfinished",
Anyone in the Sutherland Shire know where to source plants, not just natives ? - any reasonably priced nurseries ?- we're new to the area & don't quite know where to look.
OR possibly by mail order ?

Land developers have converted most of our good nurseries to blocks of units or townhouses. Just in the Menai Illawong area alone I have watched 4 nurseries disappear. I know you do not want natives but if the desire ever comes then the Sydney Wildflower Nursery in Veno St, Heathcote is small but good. It has links to the original native nursery set up in Terrey Hills.
The only other nurseries which I know of are Flower Power in Taren Point which is expensive and I think the stock is boring. There is also a nursery at Sylvania on Port Hacking Road - again nothing special but when I googled it was under the Swanes name so it may have changed since I was there years ago. There used to be a nursery in Engadine which was small but had some interesting stock but I have not been there for years so I do not even know if it is still there. It was near the entrance to the Princes Highway. Then there was a nursery with all you need for water features in Peakhurst called Mary Moodies (sp?). Yes, it had links to the lady who wrote about her experiences in Italy. The last time I drove by it was still there and it was in Boundary Road. It may have had a name change . We mainly buy natives and so my knowledge about other plants is not great. In fact, years ago when we were setting up our gardens we would spent time going to Dural and other places far afield as the quality was just not available here. I know it sounds strange but have you tried Bunnings at Bankstown near the airport. Again, not wildly exciting but better than nothing if you do not want much. The Bunnings at Taren Point is useless. Good luck and if you find a hidden gem please let me know. Re: Nurery in the shire 3May 25, 2008 6:52 pm It's been years since I seriously bought plants & bakc then I ordered a fair bit through the mail. If there is a serious shortage iof nurseries n the area, I will probably resort to that again. I must admit driving around in the last few weeks, I started to think that the nurseries were hidden away somewhere we didn't know about. Lookas as though there just aren't any.
Will start checking out the back pages of gardening mags to source mail order companies. I was very happy with the quality, condition & pricing of the plants bakc in the "old days". I saved lots of money. Let's see if still economical. Thanks neverfinished. Re: Nurery in the shire 6May 25, 2008 8:14 pm Most of them do - I think 'hard' times with water restrictions have forced them to.
We went to at least 6 or 7 within 10km of each other around Annangrove, and also a few more around Bringelly/Leppington/Catherine Field - this is all on a Saturday. Re: Nurery in the shire 7May 25, 2008 8:27 pm OK, will definitely keep that in mind.
After having moved down here - which I absolutely adore - I've found the only disadvantage is being so far away from a lot of resources/outlets/suppliers . When we lived in the inner west, we were 45 mins from anywhere....... I'd say we were pretty spoilt. But I can live with that Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Nurery in the shire 8Jun 12, 2008 4:32 pm hi I used to live in Dural. There are heaps of nurseries around the area. You can also buy some direct from the farms as well, depending on what you are looking for. It may be cheaper in bulk and help support the small guys. May be worth driving from the Shire. Re: Nurery in the shire 9Jun 12, 2008 4:44 pm sammy hi I used to live in Dural. There are heaps of nurseries around the area. Thanks Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Nurery in the shire 10Jun 13, 2008 10:00 am it depends on what you are looking for. I am not a green thumb- in fact, i don't even have a garden right now- waiting for the house to be built. As mentioned before, there is Flower Power and next door to it is their landscaping section. At Round corner on Old Northern Rd there is a small boutique nursery that sells herbs and fruit plants. In Vineys Rd Dural there is a farm that sells small hedge plants and grasses (I only drove past, haven't actually been inside). There is a rose nursery and orchid nursery around there as well.
On Old Northern rd near Dural primary is another nursery- I think it is called Hargraves. And another on Galston Rd, you'll see it, it has a big sign. Hope it helps. |
