Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Apr 10, 2014 11:01 am Hello, I think my garden bed isn't well draining after rain My front garden bed is laid like this. (please see picture) As seen in the picture, there is a slight slope to the right hand side. Thus after rain or spraying water on the turf, it seems that water tend to collect on the right hand side of the garden bed. If I dig the soil, I see quite amount of water collected there. https://www.dropbox.com/s/p9eaorey5kcu4kg/Photo%202014.%204.%209.%2017%2007%2026.jpg The following picture is 2 days after rain. I still can see water is not fully drained. https://www.dropbox.com/s/tnm2wwbzrwy6dws/Photo%202014.%204.%209.%2017%2007%2009.jpg This picture is the right end corner of my garden bed. I put more soil around the buxus, thus I don't see much water collected there. but if I dig the soil there will be quite amount of water which not drained. https://www.dropbox.com/s/c5qtlk01bzmqtlq/Photo%202014.%204.%209.%2017%2007%2019.jpg I heard buxus(japanese box) need to be planted on the well draining soil. My landscaper said they made a drain hole on the garden bed corner but it seems it's not working well. If I put more soil around the buxus plants like the last picture, will it be better? or is it just hiding the water collected, and not solve the problem? Re: Garden bed drainage problem for buxus 2Apr 10, 2014 12:55 pm Don't build the soil up as you will get collar rot that will kill the plants. The lawn is too high. You have run off from the lawn and the garden bed effectively becomes a dam. A single drain hole down one end will do diddly. You need to stop the run off. Creating a small channel between the bricks and the lawn is the quickest and easiest way to do it. You could peel back the closest strip of turf and grade the ground so that it is below the top of the bricks. The grass will still hide the back of the bricks. Also put a barrier between the bricks and the lawn to prevent seepage. 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage. Cleaner Neater Smarter Cheaper Supa Gutter Pumper. I can't help you on your drainage but if I may comment on your lawn. You have an area at the right hand end next to the drive and house side of that green box that is going to be difficult to mow and trim. I love lawn but I don't want to be a slave to it. If you are lifting the turf to fix the drainage then it might be the time to adjust the brick surround so that you don't have small irregular lawn areas. Trust me it will make your life easier forever! 2 3747 That's very helpful, thank you. I was mostly interested in knowing if a spoon drain requires a specific slope, but I appreciate the extra information. 4 3922 because its not being managed properly.
