Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Apr 07, 2014 10:50 am Long time viewer first time poster so be nice to me. OK so I've got an acre and a half out at Samford (QLD) where I'm building a new house. The land used to be a dairy farm so has coverage of native weeds (or grassy type stuff) which form a distance looks ok but as soon as you get on it its bare and scrubby, very spikey and generally no good for kids to run and play on. So I want nice grass where the kids (and me) can run around and play without fear of being stabbed with some spikey grass and bleeding out. Looking for options that isn't laying turf as its just too expensive when we're talking about 5000m2 +. Can I just get someone to go over it all with a rotary hoe behind a tractor and then seed it? Alternatively, what do people on acreage do if they want a nice big lawn? Cheers JOT72 Re: New lawn on acreage 2Apr 08, 2014 11:47 am Hi JOT72 We are on an acre and had the same dilemma but the way the builders left our site, we had to put some turf down. Ending up being 400m2 for around the house to limit any dirt etc coming through the house. We were very lucky though that we have natural couch coming up everywhere else and meeting up with the turf. And then we will slowly kill the broadleaf weeds as in our opinion, any sort of groundcover is a win for us. Its been a nightmare as our block is so rocky we have had to rake the majority of it just so that it can be mowed. So in my opinion it's still worth getting some turf. Re: New lawn on acreage 3Apr 10, 2014 7:54 am Thanks fifi. Yeah I do plan to put down around 400m of turf around the house for that very reason. Need to figure out how best to deal with the rest as we certainly don't have any natural couch, just spikey mean grass like weeds! Cheers Re: New lawn on acreage 4Apr 11, 2014 12:03 pm Thats a shame about having no natural grass. It certainly saved our butt! Sorry i cant help more. Good Luck! You'll soon have lawn without the expense. how far apart do you plant them and how do you stop weeds or other grass growing in the gaps while you wait for it to join? http://www.betterthansheets.com.au - Why use sheets for curtains in your brand new home use Better Than Sheets Temporary Paper blinds instead! Re: New lawn on acreage 7May 06, 2014 8:56 pm Whatever you're comfortable with but something like 300mm to 400mm spacing and you keep it de-weeded buy pulling them out before they have a chance to sprout throw new seed. Yes it means a bit of work 1 4560 the leaves that are now underground go yellow, the tips that poke through photosynthesise and have chlorophyll, same reason they grow rhubarb in the dark. 5 4831 |
