Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Feb 03, 2014 11:29 pm Hey everyone! Im looking to tidy up the side of my house by laying a gravel driveway. Id like to lay some fine blue metal or something similar. Now I do have one query.. The whole area is 80% sand. Will I be able to level it out, compact, weedmat, small layer of sand, gravel then compact? Will I need to mix something through the gravel to help it 'gel' at all? This area is not a high traffic area it is mainly to tidy the area up/stop weeds growing in a sandpit. Im mainly looking for a cheap fix as something is better than the current sandpit. Does anybody see any issues with my plan of attack? Should I layer it differently? Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks a lot! Re: Guidance needed on gravel driveway 2Feb 04, 2014 6:58 am You can mix in a small quantity of cement (say 2-3% by volume) Too much and you will be making it like concrete so don't overdo it. When its laid lightly spray with water to wash the cement out of the top. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Guidance needed on gravel driveway 3Feb 04, 2014 8:06 am I love those English gravel driveways. Sort of crushed stone. And - they have a real use too - for home safety. You can hear someone coming for a while - as they walk along it. Almost as good as an alarm. I'd say Google will have the instructions. Being sand it should be easy. Re: Guidance needed on gravel driveway 5Feb 04, 2014 12:52 pm I'd probably dig around half the gravel into the sand with the cement then add the remaining gravel before watering. To my understanding early saw cuts are to control shrinkage cracks, so doing them now would be pointless. Control joints may reduce ugly cracking during periods of soil… 3 9862 Hi all I need a guidance on how far I need to space expansion joints in the concrete driveway and its type (keyway/foam.) Contraction joints are at 3m max for a 125 slab. Thanks 0 10940 |
