Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 16, 2014 4:14 pm Hi all, Hoping you can help me. I am building a new house in Perth, and we are trying to get quotes sorted for soft landscaping, but it is pretty hard going unless you need the work done straight away (which we don't ad house is not built yet!). We reckon we need about 45 sq metres of good quality turf, and about 25 linear metres of garden beds (about 400 mm wide). We will need lots of soil as the soil quality is terrible and we would want the landscaper to do all the soil prep. We also need a retic system installed and would want the turf supplied, delivered and laid. Does anyone have any idea what all of this should cost?? I have priced the turf supply and soil supply (although the soil supplier suggested only 50 mm depth of soil which seems a bit limited?) but its all the labour and retic and everything together that seem to be very hard to price. Most landscapers that advertise online seem to focus on hard landscaping which we already have covered. I have $5,000 in my budget at the moment. Would really appreciate any advice Re: Soft landscaping budget for new build! Is it enough?? 2Jan 17, 2014 10:17 am Going on your dimensions we had about double the size of job and our cost came in at $15k all up two years ago so I'd budget about $9k and don't be surprised if it goes to $10k. Just remember as well that a good percentage of so called landscapers know nothing about plants so make sure you're not just getting some bloke who can just lay pavers and form up garden beds but doesn't have the faintest idea on plant selection. Soil prep is absolutely critical and will save you money in the long term through not having to buy new plants and having to water your lawn too much. 50mm of soil prep is rubbish in Perth and that person obviously does not know what they are talking about. Is it enough?? 3Jan 23, 2014 7:04 am Not sure if your watering system is in your price - but - this is a relatively easy process for you to do - AND saves money. BUT - you have to sit down and plan it properly - get the papers from - say - Bunnings - and plan what you need. It is a hard few days work - but you can do it. I did and was quite proud of it afterwards .... Re: Soft landscaping budget for new build! Is it enough?? 4Jan 23, 2014 7:08 am Sorry - when I say hard - I mean hard on the hands/fingers/knees ... Wear gloves and learn the tricks - eg use hot water to soften the piping when you attach the sprinkler bits. Make sure you buy the little hole maker - never use a knife etc to make a hole. And - have a few spares about - you always seem to need a few more joiners etc. It is a slow job if you do it right - so just take your time and follow your plan. Its much easier to do before you do the garden - so you need to know were your plants are going. Lawns are different. You lay out the piping and just mark where the sprinklers are to go. Re: Soft landscaping budget for new build! Is it enough?? 5Jan 24, 2014 9:07 pm Mike I'm interested in what you're saying. Are you talking about a drip feed line through garden beds? And did you say the lawn would be easy to install pop up sprinklers through too?? How much ballpark are we talking about to install a system like that? My holes are around 450mm deep which I'll put a 200mm stirrup into. The bottom of these holes seem firm enough. … 0 3316 Most of the time, council will push you out to a private certifier as it ties up their limited resources.
