Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 01, 2014 12:45 pm Hi guys just wanting some ideas. Am building a new home which hopefully will be getting started later this month. Will have a pretty small backyard approx 6mx 15m. We have to young boys 2 and 3 3/4. Now i dont really have a clue on gardening but hope to learn and also teach my young boys. Want to make a yard for them to play and learn. Would like some fruit trees thinking dwarf trees apples ,lemon ?. And also want to grow some vegies too. Also am tossing up the idea of a few chickens. ANy helpful ideas would be appreciated. Re: help in designing a fairly small backyard for young kids 2Jan 01, 2014 2:38 pm Hi! I have two young boys (2.5 and nearly 6) and this is what they love most about our garden: the vegie patch - seeing the food grow and then eating it. Has the advantage of being quick (fruit trees take many years to establish - that said we have lemon, orange, lime as they are all fairly compact) the grass area to play on - water pistols are a current favourite, followed by chasing bubbles from the $10 kmart bubble machine! chasing our chickens when we let them out, and collecting the eggs. we have a trampoline but it does not really get used that much, and takes up a lot of room they also love riding their bikes on our deck - so a large paved or decked area is a good idea too. mr 2.5 years LOVES his sandpit, which is currently just a shell style one. I would also highly recommend finding and joining your local toy library. we often borrow cubbies and other play equipment which we can have for a couple of weeks before returning it and getting something else. great for small yards!! http://www.toylibrary.asn.au/toy_libraries_find.htm Recently moved to a 60's home in need of some improvement! http://s797.photobucket.com/user/leenii ... ch%20House Old house: http://s797.photobucket.com/albums/yy25 ... loo/House/ Re: help in designing a fairly small backyard for young kids 4Jan 03, 2014 7:27 am Agree to all of the above. We have a 5 & 3yr old. We have a fairly large back yard and the kids love the veggie patches (mind you, at the moment they are loving getting absolutely filthy in mud they make in one corner of one of the veggie patches which 'Dad' is not too thrilled about ). Love the driveway side of house for riding bikes - and drawing on the concrete with their chalk (washes off easily enough). Mind you, this side might eventually become an outdoor bbq area so their bike riding space might become limited We have a large wooden swing/slide/fort type construction (given to us when some friends moved house). Takes up a lot of space, but they do love the swing and slide aspect as a minimum. We also have a trampoline - It's not used as often as I would like given the space it takes - but they still use it enough not to be able to get rid of it. Sand pit is always a winner (if building one yourself as opposed to the plastic tubs, try to make it under a shaded area or erect some shade cloth). We are considering chickens too.... but not sure I want to take on the work. I want more free time not more work time . But - the things we don't have which I would like or have heard are great for kids are : Stepping stones in the grass or through the garden (something for them to hop or jump along on). Still planning on this one. Cubby - you can get timber ones that are up on stilts which gives the option of having a slide down - and a sandpit underneath which saves some space. If you google kids gardens or kids playgrounds, there are lots of fabulous ideas for something a bit different too.
