Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design Re: Zoysia project in Melbourne 21Sep 15, 2014 10:43 pm I have had EZ for going on 4 years. It doesn't get that much better with age, it simply doesn't brown off as quick in winter. But it still always browns off whether there is frost or not. Thats the biggest issue with zoysia grasses in vic, all other turf ie couch, buffalo, kik won't brown off unless there is a frost. And because of zoysia's slow growth rate, the self repairing from the winter damage takes forever, well into summer. So if you don't get frosts, have full sun, low wear and are a patient then zoysia is great. Front yards and hard to mow areas is really the only suitable spots. Re: Zoysia project in Melbourne 22Jan 19, 2015 9:23 am Hi Guys, about time for an update. I have found that the Nara seeds loads. OzBreed say that this is abnormal and the lawn may be stressed. I left the lawn long last winter and it looked rubbish. Too much leaf matter means more nutrients being used up so it probably pays to keep the lawn shorter in winter. I have begun renovating an old cylinder mower which I have been using on the Nara and it appears to prefer the shortness as it does not seed and grows a little more prostrate. Here are some photos. This is the backyard this morning (after I seriously scalped it 6 weeks ago...it looked completely dead then) Here is a section that I mowed with the cylinder Here is the last section to recover which had loads of seed head (this is the bit that tends to get prickly) I am going to overseed it this year with Perennial Rye to nurse it through winter. Zoysia project in Melbourne 23Jan 20, 2015 9:22 pm Overseeding kinda works with zoysias... Once the rye dies off it takes a long while for it to repair the gaps.. About the whole of summer.. If you do overseed either get a turf company/guy to selectively spray the rye out in spring or stop all watering, which will stress the nara but will come back.. Again very slowly.. I oversowed empire and it was a complete flop due to a very wet spring and summer. The rye never died off and i now have 80% rye and 20% empire. This is melbourne mind you. The patch of nara i have has been taken completely over by cool season grasses also.. Re: Zoysia project in Melbourne 24Jan 21, 2015 6:55 am Hi BeatrixKiddo, Thanks for that info. I am in Melbourne also. I had considered overseeding with tall fescue and assume that I will have the same issue. My wife is not very happy with the Nara. I think it is a lovely grass when it is in top condition, but it does seem to require a lot of water to look good and remain soft. Ironically I almost wish i had put down Kenda or Village Green Kikuyu I might have to reconsider the overseeding. hmmmm Re: Zoysia project in Melbourne 25Jan 21, 2015 7:36 am I wouldn't use fescue it would be even harder than rye to get rid of. If you use rye just follow the above advice, it will make for a better year round lawn. You can convert your existing lawn by planting little squares of village green turf or kenda into the nara lawn and it will take over in the following years. You have already done the soil prep so its easier than ripping the whole lot up and starting again. Just requires a little patience. DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair That laser level looks lovely!
