Today I gave it a little trim as according to my ruler it was getting up to 11cm and so I mowed it back to about 6 cm (got about two handfuls of clippings). I will also re-fertilise next week. Hoping to get some rain this weekend to help it along as well. Also, one of my composts are ready to go so I may be starting to also put the compost in each of the levels in preparation for strawberry plants in spring. The main places it has taken well were the areas that I 'filled in' with the dirt/rock I dug out from around the other side of the house. My guess is that because this was compacted with a soil float whereas the fill next to the house was compacted by an excavator, it is easier for the roots to take hold and so establish some good grass. But I am really happy with it. Not so happy with the lack of decent rain though. Building tip No. 3: A raft slab will not get you down a river. A waffle pod slab does not go with maple syrup. I have also go the retaining wall up around the other side from where I cut out the dirt to use as fill. So I thought it would be a good time to do some before and after shots. So from this... Good work, keep the pics coming. Re: My mammoth tree trunk stepped garden: Awesome present! 32Oct 29, 2014 7:09 pm Hi all, It has been a good long while but I have been busy (not always with the garden though). Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The grass I sowed bloomed brilliantly throughout autumn and survived the winter. There is some patchiness now but it is still growing well and the horses are mowing it consistently. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Here you can see that all the levels have been mulched (all the mulch was from the smaller branches of a couple of trees I felled plus some other dried reed plants of my mother. You can also see the steps and planter boxes I built with the baby orange trees. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ These are the strawberry plants I got for my birthday. Eventually there will be more and they will cover one level. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ My side yard is coming along nicely. I want to do some timber trim to the top and bottom of the wire and I will also add crushed concrete to the inner area (I am smashing up all the concrete left behind by the builders). I am also backfilling the trench with all the lovely compost I have been making over the past six months. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ And to cover the wire was my other birthday present, a pair of kiwi fruit vines! Apparently, these spread like crazy so I am hoping it will cover over all the wire in a few years. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ And I am starting to working on the front garden which will be a dry creek bed for drainage. First off though, I am digging out the rest of the area (back to the pick and shovel) and building a natural rock retaining wall (my place is very generous in the provision of rocks!). Will try to post pictures more regularly. Building tip No. 3: A raft slab will not get you down a river. A waffle pod slab does not go with maple syrup. I have a number of large areas to cover and the native stuff doesn't seem to cover as nicely as yours. http://brontelodge.blogspot.com.au/ Deposit 22/03 Land 08/04 Colours 02/06 Contract 07/07 Elec 02/09 DA 04/09 Cons list 25/09 Slab 13/11 Frames 25/11 Roof 10/12 Bricks 16/01/15 Locked up 13/02 Re: My mammoth tree trunk stepped garden: Awesome present! 34Oct 31, 2014 11:32 am The grass I planted was a giant bag of cool season grass from bunnings, which I have used to seed the back paddock twice (first one kind of failed) and the bits in the pictures. The only place where I have added soil is around the house due to it being compacted fill once the house was built. I did the main sowing in March and mixed fertiliser in with the seed. Then fertilised again at start of April and May. If I water, I will usually add a worm juice mix (pour the worm poo into one of those weed and feed bottles you attach to the hose, works a treat). I have also done one lot of fertilising this spring. What I have found is that fertiliser and water is key. We were lucky enough to get that rain come through which really helped the spring sowing (I wasn't optimistic but had to use the seed as use by date was November). Give us a PM with your number if you want to meet up and discuss in person. Welcome to the Park! Building tip No. 3: A raft slab will not get you down a river.
