Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 03, 2013 5:05 pm Hi Everyone, Our house is due to be completed and really am trying to find inspiration around what to do in the garden. Our block is roughly 110m deep and 40m wide. I have included an image of a few ideas that i quickly did in google sketch but just not sure. I know i cannot start until i have a rough plan as will have to do any infrastructure things first such as watering system backbones etc. Things we would like to have are: Chicken and duck run Vege Garden Play equipment Everything else is open to suggestion. Re: An acre to landscape and unable to find inspiration 2Nov 03, 2013 5:20 pm Hi, just some practical suggestions. It's good you have the chook and duck pen well away from the house and also close to the vegie garden. Such things as compost bins, manure/mulch piles could also be hidden by landscaping (out of sight so you don't have to barrow stuff too far to the vegie garden.) What do the green screen walls next to vegie garden represent? Are you going to have a duck pond? Re: An acre to landscape and unable to find inspiration 3Nov 03, 2013 7:34 pm Was thinking a hedge there of some sort to block out the neighbours a little, there are also two rain water tanks going in as well. We have mains water but wanted to use as much water onsite as possible. Re: An acre to landscape and unable to find inspiration 4Feb 04, 2014 7:40 pm How are you going with your plans? Will the veggie patch be in full sun? Re: An acre to landscape and unable to find inspiration 5Feb 04, 2014 8:15 pm I would suggest planting lots of nice tall deciduous trees around the chooks. You've got one but you need to give them lots of shade in summer. Are you wanting to look all the way up the garden from the house? If not I would be using medium height trees up closer to the house to section off the garden. I definitely think you need a nice path linking the house to the chooks and veggies. One thing I disagree and that's having the veggies too far grime the house. You don't want it to become a long walk to get a bit of parsley or something. Re: An acre to landscape and unable to find inspiration 6Feb 05, 2014 7:26 am Looks good. I like the idea of a pond too. Grass is nice - but can be hard to maintain - especially re water. I also like the idea of the trees. Pick wisely. They can provide great shade - but trees can also bring issues. No idea where you are - but can you sink a bore/spear ? Also - set up a good solar system ? Re: An acre to landscape and unable to find inspiration 7Feb 05, 2014 9:12 am Whilst you have the earthmoving people there, get them to dig some trenches so that you can put some 25mm blueline poly pipe around the yard, so you can get water all the way around the place. It's no good having extra long 12mm garden hose joined together, as you'll never the pressure/volume of water out of the end of it. Nice to have some trees around the place too, but don't forget that if you put the wrong tree too close to your neighbours, you may cause them problems, which then causes you problems. I.E. putting up tall trees near your fence line, that in turn shades the neighbours solar panels! We've also got a 1 acre block, that is a sloping block which we need to decide what we're going to do too, but we have taken advantage of the trenches for the power and run some 25mm blueline poly down it, and added taps at a couple of different spots so we will have water down the front. The house is about 100m away from the front boundary, so a 100m length of garden hose would be absolutely useless over that distance. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Re: An acre to landscape and unable to find inspiration 8Feb 06, 2014 9:10 am Thank you for all the replies, they are truly helpful. I have been doing some more work on the design and will put another screenshot on here once i get the internet at home....Telstra still a work in progress. Basic changes are putting in three height terracing from right to left of the block with play area etc for our little girl. Little hard to explain but will be clearer once i put the picture up. Haven't started work as of yet as has been way to hot, we are near Wagga Wagga and been having 42 degree days. Waiting for the quote to come back for the retaining walls and then i will organise a dozer to come in and do a whole heap of work Thanks again everyone!!! Re: An acre to landscape and unable to find inspiration 9Feb 21, 2014 7:34 pm Looks like you have some great ideas. We have a house yard of similar size on our 6 acres that we are doing major house extensions and renovations at the moment. I am fortunate enough to have some heavy earth moving machinery at my disposal ( at a cheap price anyway) so I have been doing a lot of infrastructure work in the way of irrigation and churning the heavy clay soil in an attempt to improve it with organic matter. Anyhow, I would recommend you research poly pipe sizing as I believe 25mm is too small over a distance. I think poly pipe is measured outside diameter. I've gone 40mm through the majority of it, some 63mm (very expensive) some 2" rural, and finishing into 32mm. I believe that you can't go too big close to the pump, then reducing down further away would have less impact on flow and pressure. I have no formal qualification but a bit of practical experience. Agreed, if you are running any distance, as you would on a 6 acre block, I'd go for larger than 25mm polypipe. You start to get friction problems they tell me pushing water through 25mm on a long distance, which slows water flow if you are wanting to move water around... pressure isn't the issue. 40mm (1.5 inch) is a good size to run with, as it's still not all that hard to work with. 50mm starts to be bothersome to work with.
