I think poly pipe is measured outside diameter. I've gone 40mm through the majority of it, some 63mm (very expensive) some 2" rural, and finishing into 32mm. I believe that you can't go too big close to the pump, then reducing down further away would have less impact on flow and pressure. Agreed, if you are running any distance, as you would on a 6 acre block, I'd go for larger than 25mm polypipe. You start to get friction problems they tell me pushing water through 25mm on a long distance, which slows water flow if you are wanting to move water around... pressure isn't the issue. 40mm (1.5 inch) is a good size to run with, as it's still not all that hard to work with. 50mm starts to be bothersome to work with.
