Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 01, 2013 8:01 pm Hello All, We haven't started building out home as yet but I am trying to get ideas on the front landscaping. I have put up a sketch of how the front is sitting. North is facing the right boundary I am thinking on fake grass, white pebbles and roses.. but cannot come up with anything that is out of the normal. I am also unsure what to do with the side of the front opposite the garage as there is going to be 4 mtrs between the house and the side fence. The side fences cant come further than 1mtr behind the front façade and no front fences allowed. Appreciate anyone's comments/thoughts/suggestions. Or even if anyone is a landscaper that can assist with the design only as I will be doing it myself. Re: Front Landscaping - Ideas Please!! 2Nov 01, 2013 9:16 pm We are currently at the same stage and trying to design something for the front. We started with the driveway then moved on to the porch. Then to a path from porch to either the driveway, letterbox or front of block. This path could be paved, stepping stones, low level plants with mulch or mixture of all. You need to think about your type of letterbox and placement. Any special things you want to put in the front? Like a big pot, water feature, screen, artistic piece? Then we thought about plants, looks like you'll need a largeish piece or two to fill the front. Start to think about garden beds and lawn and maybe more pebbles and pavers as a feature or as a path to the side of the house. Think about colours of leaves of plants to contrast against the house. For us we chose an aggregate driveway, aggregate stepping stones from the decked porch all the way to the front of the block. The stepping stones are 800 x 500 and 300 apart. We will put the metal edging 300 from the sides and fill with pebbles all the way. We will pour one stepping stone to go between driveway and porch for access. Will line each side of the driveway with long straight pointed up plants so they are symmetrical. The letterbox will be bricked and rendered next to our stepping stone path. We will have a long low bricked garden bed from the letterbox parallel with the road for pointy plants and a big square bricked Garden bed to the end of that with a big tree in it. Close to the house we have garden beds but it's not too busy, a big dark pot against our light render and colorful plants. We have a dark rendered feature blade wall which we will line with light colored pointy plants. We will add a path from the front to the back with pavers in a stepping stone fashion with either gravel or blue metal as they are cheaper than pebbles. The metal edging will be good there too. Then we were Left with a big void out the front so copied the bricked garden bed with a flat garden bed in the corner. This won't make much sense without a pic so I'll add one soon I like modern symmetrical type gardens so down the side of your house I would line cherry blossoms all the way with a stepping stone path and maybe some simple pointy plants along the house/fence. If you want to use the space for something then design it around that. Re: Front Landscaping - Ideas Please!! 3Nov 03, 2013 9:31 am There is a process you should follow with any garden design. Firstly you want to think about the functions that you want the space to achieve, for the front, this may simply be to look good and add to the street appeal. Next work out the hard landscaping elements, then lastly look at feature element and plants. A few simple tips are to look at what appeals to you in your neighbours gardens, this will also show you which plants grow in the area. Also google images for front garden ideas. Good luck Re: Front Landscaping - Ideas Please!! 4Dec 22, 2013 8:22 pm Thank you both for your advise / input.. greatly appreciated. I have been driving around my local area and also checking google map view.. its been a great source of ideas.
