Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 21, 2013 4:46 pm Hi all, I have attached a photo of our outdoor bbq area (BBQ not in yet) and either side we have two planter boxes - Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Wondering if some folks might suggest what we put in here??? The photo is facing east - so sun rises behind this fence line and will see mostly midday and afternoon sun. We initially wanted to make them a herb garden but feel most herbs will require more sun. We were also thinking dwarf lemon and lime trees but still unsure they would get enough sun?? Other ideas were cordyline red star/ red sensation or dracaena marginata. The dracaenas we could chop the tops off when they get too high but not sure about the cordylines???? Definitely not yucca as leaves are too sharp around edges. And dragon trees are out as we have used them next to our pool area. Anyone want to chime in with an idea??? Building the Riva by Dale Alcock Homes. If sun rises behind fence doesn't mean BBQ gets west sun? Or am I confused? Sounds like enough sunlight too me PS.. Who built the BBQ area and did the render?? Looks fantastic Re: Ideas please!!!! 3Oct 21, 2013 4:51 pm If they get mostly afternoon and noon sun then herbs should be fine - those are bright hot sun hours - and the dark colours you have will add to the heat of it all. In fact anything you plant is going to have to be very heat resistant to survive in there and well watered. Go for sun loving stuff. Why not a bed of basil and chillies - dwarf chillies could give you some fun colour. Throw in thyme and rosemary also for some solid heat loving good smelling insect repellents. All four of those will survive well together Re: Ideas please!!!! 4Oct 21, 2013 11:14 pm I agree herbs would work well. I'd try parsley., basil, thyme etc. Rosemary might also be happy. Flowers such as petunias would work also. We were told now is the perfect time to plant them and we showed pics etc and the guy said they should be fine. The guy said to plant and water in then just leave them to fend for themselves and give the occasional water during summer - which works out well as they are the only garden beds around the house without reticulation!!! We could have hooked them up but in the end was a bit of an annoyance so we decided not to bother!!! Going to do herbs in a few small pots in a bit sunnier spot. We love chives and parsley (great for scrambled eggs on Sunday mornings) and rosemary for the lamb roasts!!!!! Building the Riva by Dale Alcock Homes. The lower chord of the first pic would be a massive lump if made using timber considering the size of the rafters.
