Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 14, 2013 6:25 pm Dear H1ers, need your help again. I am going to do a bit of backyard blitz and have dreamt up a plan, what do you think, would it work? I know it's a bit crowded, but I am a tree hugger, just want as many trees as possible in my backyard. My backyard is small about 6m x 16m northeasterly aspect, I am in a corner lot with no neighbour on the left so most part of the yard got full sun till 4pm. I've got most of the trees except those Capital Pears. Also, I have trouble deciding whether the raised garden bed should be on the left (in front of the family room) or on the right (in front of the alfresco)? any suggestions are welcome. here are the plans. sorry about the blurry pics. You could even dot some rosemary, thyme, rocket etc. around, in between those trees to add more produce to your kitchen. Those Capital pear trees might grow to big for that sized area over time. So you can keep cutting them back, or you could plant some dwarf fruiting pears in place of those to add even more produce to your kitchen. In regards to the layout, i would probably turn it into a figure eight by joining those two O shaped lawn areas together. Besides that, its a nice design and i wish you all the best! Just thinking it may be shaded by the alfresco roof in winter. Do you have children? If so I would put the raised bed in front of the family room, so there is a clear path from the alfresco to the area of grass. Re: Critique my backyard blitz plan please 5Oct 17, 2013 11:25 am You're spot on Tina, Winter could be a problem, It should be fine in Spring/Summer, I've been surveying that area since the beginning of spring, it gets about 4-5 hours of direct sunlight below fence line from 9am, taller trees over the fence line get longer exposure, not sure about winter though. I could have planted it next to the mini peach, but I really don't want so many fruiting trees planted in the same area so as to avoid insects problem. I've built the raised bed to about 500mm above ground, so hopefully in a couple of years time, its canopy will go above the fence line for more sunlight. As for the raised garden bed, I also like it in front of the family room as I do have 2 kids under 5, just couldn't make up my mind. Thanks for your input Tina.
