Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 26, 2013 9:41 am HI folks Can anyone give me an indication as to what kind of access and machinery is required to remove 3 x mid size (approx. 5m high) trees from our backyard? We might even lop them down ourselves and it would mainly be stump/root removal from there. (Trees are broad-leaf privets to the best of my understanding). Would access via a side gate (approx. 1m wide) leading off from our driveway, and any truck requirements only being able to get, say, 15-20m away (in our driveway), be adequate? I just want to make sure we are allowing enough access to remove these trees down the track. Cheers... HHCIB Re: Equipment/access requirements to remove trees.... 2Oct 26, 2013 9:56 am I thought they could do it "manually", ie. they woudl climb up the tree, tie the big branches up for safety (or whatever) and cut them one by one - manually (chainsaw?) and finally cut the stump close to ground. And then simply carry or pull (if no damage can be done if pulling) the branches out of your backyard. And then mulch it all outside on the street?? So, no access issue really. Well that's what I think should be ppossible anyway. And then you can get (if you want) those specialised guys who actually grind the stump in/below the ground (obviously, not all of it, but probably about 30-45cm deep). This machine should fit via 1m easily. Depending on where you are located, I could give you names of both traders if you want (might take time to dig them up thoguh ). I just didn't want to go about doing some things we have planned and then finding out we had shot ourselves in the foot with access for this. And thank you for the offer of some recommendations but we are in Melb - and we have a few leads on that front. Thank you anyway. Next question is.... we are considering doing some decking to the side of our house where our existing (soon to be ripped up) driveway is (driveway currently extends right through to back yard). Anyway, decking would be raised (maybe 300mm) and am just wondering if down the track we needed access to yard for say a bob cat (dreaming on, but say for pool excavation.....) can they get up and over a deck - assuming all other access/roof/posts are clear etc. As in, can you just put up a ramp down to get up and over the deck. Or would putting a deck down with no other flat access really be shooting ourselves in the foot? (We don't need access for cars - wheelbarrows we can manage either down our other side or making ramps). It is more an enquiry relating to bobcats or dingoes or what-not. Cheers again... HHCIB Re: Equipment/access requirements to remove trees.... 4Oct 26, 2013 4:03 pm I wouldn't want to run a bobcat, or even a dingo Loader over a deck. Pool first and then the deck! Re: Equipment/access requirements to remove trees.... 5Oct 26, 2013 5:18 pm Thanks Bashworth..... Problem is, pool is a dreamtime away (4-5yrs at least)..... deck could be/would be used now. We already have some decking so it's not like we have to have more deck - but we have some space adjacent to the existing deck in our 'driveway' (that is soon to be ripped up) that we are going to part pave - and the plan was, part deck (would be a step lower than existing deck)..... but yes, it does mean that we are blocking access to the back yard via this deck. Hmmmm..... back to the thinking board . Cheers. PS - just thinking more..... if it really came down to it, our neighbours' driveway also runs quite deep down the side of their house - on the opposite side to where this deck would be, and at a push, we could remove some fencing and gain access for bobcat via their driveway (we get on well and do favours for each other etc, so unless it was a huge inconvenience, I'm sure they wouldn't mind). But need to give this all more thought... maybe straight paving is the way to go...... Re: Equipment/access requirements to remove trees.... 6Oct 28, 2013 10:27 pm That was my first thought too - to ask the neighbours. But - here comes the BUT! Even though things may seem or be really good ATM, who knows what could happen and they could change - or even sell and move. So, it's always an iffy one (at least for me). Maybe paving is better for the time being? BTW, what is wrong with the dwy? Could it not wait until you are ready for the pool? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ...
