Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Sep 26, 2013 7:41 am Probably due to the warmer weather, but I've noticed more and more small spiders appearing in my new garden. Whilst watering the camelias this morning I noticed what looked like hundreds of small ones tucked under a couple of leaves. The new mulch (wood chip blend) probably isn't helping either. Before these get bigger and out of hand what can I spray them with without harming the plants or soil? I have some "strike out" (don't ask me where I sourced it from), but this may be over the top and harmful to the garden. I'm sure others would be having similar issues at this time of year. I'm hoping there's a spray that I can just apply over the whole area. Nikos. Re: Small spiders in new garden 2Sep 27, 2013 10:30 am Had a closer look and did a bit of a search on the net and it appears the nest I'm seeing may be aphids as they look like tiny ants and not uncommon with camellias. Anyone have experience with these and can recommend a treatment which is safe for my garden. Nikos. Re: Small spiders in new garden 3Sep 27, 2013 4:40 pm Funny, I was just going to post yesterday asking if they were in fact aphids (rather than spiders) but got sidetracked. The problem is that a lot of the commercially available sprays also kill the "good" insects in your garden (such as bees and ladybirds). Maybe do a google search for organic aphid spray? Here's a suggestion from the Burke's Backyard website: "To control aphid: Only use chemicals as a last resort!! The simplest way to get rid of aphids is to blast them off with a strong jet of water. Or just squeeze them off with your fingers. Other “safe” alternatives are home made soap or oil sprays. Soap sprays will kill aphids fairly quickly and can be washed off the plant to reduce the risk of any damage to the plant. This can be repeated every 4-5 days if heavily infested. Soap sprays vary but the simplest recipe is water and 2-3% washing up detergent Shop bought “Eco-oil” will smother the aphids so they can’t breath and damage their protective body coverings, this combined with “Eco-neem oil” are great all round coverage for most insects." Hope that helps Thankyou for your advice. We do have Caesar coming out and hopefully resolve the issue for us. 4 18748 Hi all, We are looking to build a new two storey house in western Sydney. Can anyone recommend a smallish builder to go with? We are trying to stay away from the big… 0 12140 consider putting in wall WC instead of robe in the same bedroom, then it might be doable to hook up to the existing piping. 4 6628 |
