Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Sep 02, 2013 5:35 pm Hi, Block had existing retaining walls. Block was excavated for the slab, and they dug an extra 30-40cm below the kopper logs and laid the foundation there. Now on one side of the block there is an exposed ‘wall’ of soil/clay/earth that sits below the last kopper log. Im unsure how deep the post go down below the ground, but I would imagine quite far? Is this normal? What would be needed from a retaining wall perspective in this situation? Its as if the existing retaining wall has now been rendered redundant as a result of the excavation works? Thanks Wiz Re: Retaining wall question 2Sep 02, 2013 5:40 pm Basically the wall relies on the full depth of the 'soil' in front of the wall to support it. You need to immediately ask the builder for well compacted material to be placed in front of the wall to original ground level. and notify them you will consider them responsible for any movement of the wall. Re: Retaining wall question 3Sep 02, 2013 5:45 pm Thank you Bashworth That’s what I thought. I couldn’t understand why they would excavate below the original ground level and lay the foundation there despite there being an existing retaining wall. If they were to fill the front of the wall to original ground level, I think it might be higher than the floor of the slab. I have this bad feeling the builder will say this is my problem…. Re: Retaining wall question 4Sep 02, 2013 6:21 pm If the wall was there before the builder gave you his price it should be their responsibility. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get !
