Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Sep 10, 2009 5:49 pm After our initial shock fom our original landscaping quote we are thinking of doing alot of it ourselves. We will need to call in the experts to excavate/level the front and back yards in preperation for lawn though. I just spoke to a company who said they charge $85.00 per hour for bobcat/tiptruck work. Tip costs are not included as this gets quoted when they can actually see what sort of soil/material is on site that needs to be removed. Is this a standard/fair price? Also how long do people think they would be on site for. The front yard area is roughly 7m deep x 12m wide and the backyard area approx 8m deep x 15.24m wide. I'm just trying to gage a rough idea as to how long such jobs take. At a guess I would have thought 3-4 hours - so I would probably be looking at about $600 or so which is manageable, but I have no clue and might get a shock if they are there all day and I get a bill for thousands. Thought I'd ask the experts My karma ran over your dogma Re: EXCAVATION/LEVELLING COSTS 2Sep 10, 2009 6:08 pm hey bel, i am thinking of the same thing as we were told our clay sort of soil is no good for any decent gardening (i want a small vegie patch, lemon tree, some other flowering/low maintenance plants) so thinking whether i should get the soil changed before the fencing and u know the biggest question is "how much will it cost'? if it's manageble..... bel, did you add a rainwater tank or not? hubby wants to add one now before fencing, i sort of... not sure - secretely wanting to spend the money on soil/excavation. hmmmm, what do u think? nh Re: EXCAVATION/LEVELLING COSTS 3Sep 10, 2009 6:24 pm Hopefully we will get some replies then nh We didn't add a rainwater tank, but was told I could connect a dripline irrigation system using the grey water from washing machine and also the rain water catcher-thing at the front of the property. My karma ran over your dogma Re: EXCAVATION/LEVELLING COSTS 4Sep 10, 2009 7:14 pm my normal rates $99 hr truck, excavator and bobcat. min 4 hr plus float, or --- $88 hr bobcat min 4 hr + float, excavator $88 hr min 4 hr plus float, truck $88 hr min 4 hr plus float clean fill $100 tipping fee per 12 tonne if site available in project area also depends on size of machines ie my prices are basd on 3 tonne excavator and mid size bobcat bigger machines high cost Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com Re: EXCAVATION/LEVELLING COSTS 5Sep 10, 2009 9:25 pm Thanks davinci So it sounds about right then Would you also happen to know out of interest how long this sort of job usually takes? In hours? The guy said he had a 3 hr min, it would be great if they could do it in 3 hours, but I don't know if this is achievable. Also we have very limited access to the back yard - only though one side gate which is only about 1m wide, is there another way they get machines into the back yard to do the excavation/levelling? My karma ran over your dogma Re: EXCAVATION/LEVELLING COSTS 6Sep 11, 2009 7:20 pm TIME WISE DEPENDS ON ENDLESS FACTORS. IS THE OPERATOR COMPITENT, IS THE SOIL SANDY OR CLAY, IS IT WET OR DRY IS THERE A LARGE SWING AREA FOR MACHINERY, IS THERE ROCK, HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET TO TIPPING SITE AND BACK ETC. I CHARGE MIN 4 HR PLUS FLOAT. FOR TIGHT ACCESS I USE A CONTRACTOR WITH AN EXCAVATOR WITH EXPANDABLE TRACKS. IT CAN FIT THRU A HOUSE DOOR (NOT THAT YOU WOULD) AND EXPAND TO 1.2 MTR WIDE WITH A 2 TONNE DIGGING CAPACITY. BUT THERE ARNT MANY OF THESE MACHINES AROUND. ANOTHER OPTION IS HAVE THE MACHINE STATIC IN BACK YARD AND FILL BARROWS AND BARROW SOIL ETC TO FRONT IF NOT LOADING INTO A TRUCK Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com Hi guys, I want to do some floor levelling before laying the planks and am considering doing it with self-levelling or yellow tongue PB board.
