I am thinking of using limestone blocks as sort of retaining. so that front yard is dividing into 2 steps -step being at the boundry where my house boundry finish and common land starts. Then may be install fence on top of those limestone blocks. You have kept it interesting by having a curved driveway too. Retaining is a more formal look although the type of plantings can soften it. The big rock came free with the site escavation and a mate owns a Bobcat so the Beer economy covered the cost of preping the site for planting and positioning the rock in place. A couple hundred bucks for the railway sleepers, and to save some more cash I bought most of the plants cheap when they were small and grew them in pots at our rental so I would have bigger plants to plant when the time came. The 2 key things we looked at in our plant selection were low maintencance and hardy. 10m3 of leaf much takes care of the weeds. The entire front garden cost me under $1000.
