Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jul 09, 2013 2:17 pm We have a long and skinny area down the side of our house (aprox 45sqm) which gets plenty of light but no direct or indirect sunlight. So natural grass will not grow here. We currently have pebbles down but have had issues with rainwater sitting and seeping into our foundation. We require something where rainwater will run away from the foundations, ie concrete. But concrete is so expensive not to mention something we're not keen on looking at for years to come (our kitchen and second lounge look directly into this area). So what about artificial turf? The area gets no traffic. Will the artificial turf keep water away from the house? Any advise or comments appreciated! Re: No sun-concrete or artificial turf???? 2Jul 09, 2013 3:03 pm Meisner Will the artificial turf keep water away from the house? It's a plastic mat with high embodied energy. Sounds like you need to lay a small ag pipe and then plant with a ground cover like Campanula or Baby Tears that will surround large pavers / stepping stones. I assume that the area would need accessing occasionally. There should also be a minimum slope of 1:20 away from the house over the first metre as required by the BCA when a house is built. 3in1 Supadiverta. Re: No sun-concrete or artificial turf???? 3Jul 09, 2013 4:19 pm First you need to take care of the drainage with some piping/drains. Then I would consider non-grass groundcovers, there would be something native to your area. For example I would use native violet and kidney weed, but these may or may not do well in your area in your soil. Re: No sun-concrete or artificial turf???? 4Jul 14, 2013 9:30 am Why don't you do a combination of gravel and real turf - just make sure you get a kind that survives in shade (i.e Sir Walter). We are doing this on the sides of our house, grass doesn't necessarily need sunlight. It sounds like perhaps you need to install a drain before you put in anything else? They using concrete or timber sleepers? Timber or steel uprights? Any drainage behind sleeper? 3 5876 To my understanding early saw cuts are to control shrinkage cracks, so doing them now would be pointless.
