Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jul 09, 2013 12:43 pm Hi all, I'm back with a request for further help........... Our ADs which are in our front yard on our corner block, are growing erratically. One side are flourishing, while the others are struggling. This side of the corner gardenbed faces EAST : Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The RH side is great; the LH side which is closer to the corner is straggly : RH side Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ LH side Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Then we have the front bed which faces NORTH : Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I know they get a bit straggly in winter but that isn't the case here as they have always looked like this. Just not thriving....... Any ideas why & what I can do to improve them ? or should I just pull them out & replace them ? Thanks again, all Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Help with Altenanthera dentata............ 3Jul 12, 2013 10:11 pm No idea, but it's so interesting how they obviously and gradually go worse towards the corner. I have noticed a similar thing with my aga's - I think maaybe the better ones are having more afternoon / very hot sun than the not-so-happy ones. Our bed/soil prep was the same all along the line, so it must be the sun path / how much air they get. Me thinks ... My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Help with Altenanthera dentata............ 4Jul 13, 2013 10:49 am .......or the tree that is located on the nature strip, might be taking all the nutrients/water ? b****y frustrating .......btw, hi there Lex ......how are things ? Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Help with Altenanthera dentata............ 5Jul 17, 2013 10:54 am Maybe give them some seaweed solution? Re: Help with Altenanthera dentata............ 7Jul 18, 2013 12:01 pm Bugger! We had a similar issue with lilypillys/hibiscus that the previous owner planted. Once we ripped the hibiscus out, the lilypilly thrived and few well. Perhaps take out every second plant and see if they start to recover? Re: Help with Altenanthera dentata............ 8Jul 24, 2013 1:42 pm Hi Southie , it's OK, still not fully finished! And still about half the backyard to re-do ... and I am so lazy ATM (winter time!??!) so it doesn't help Yes, I think plants are a lot like houses - location (3x) ... If your north row of plants has the house from the south and large tree/s on north, it may simply be the lack of sun, air movement and nutrients, as you said, and maybe these little things are more sensitive to their conditions. Maybe you can replant that side (as a start) with something more robust (agapanthuses ) and see how it goes? I can't think of anything better and tougher than them!! and easy to work with and maintain ... I think my row of agas is my best gardening decision so far, even though the ones that go into afternoon shade quicker are not as meaty and lush as those on full sun and open air (with no fences, shrubs etc. nearby). I think you can't go wrong with them. And ours responded amazingly to a bit of advanced soil prep with compost and manure and really god turning over (and over ... and over ...). And you can find them cheaper on gumtree/ebay quite often, and sometimes sold in clumps, which is even better. Oh, but now I am getting ahead of myself again My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Help with Altenanthera dentata............ 9Jul 24, 2013 2:21 pm Hiya Lex, I know all about aggies , I used them bountifully in my previous house....and yes, you're right - they are so tough & easy to grow. However, you know : new house......new ideas I'll persist with the ADs I think, maybe replace them with some new ones. Though, you know, I am getting over anything house & garden . Must be the ageing process.......other priorities. Rather spend my money on holidays than bricks & mortar. OMG, not the forum to be saying those kinds of things Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Hi there, long-time lurker but first time posting. I've bought a house 2 and a bit years ago and last year we had some major water damage on a converted pergola area… 0 7930 Yes, unless you are in a low intensity rainfall area or the area is protected from rain. Do you have access to NCC Part 2 or can you download it? I can email you a copy… 10 12510 Thankyou so much 😀 I've decided on White on white for doors and trims, White on white 50% on ceiling and Mt buller for walls. Fingers crossed it will look OK 😀 2 7158 |
