Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jul 08, 2013 6:03 pm Hi everyone, We are currently doing our backyard landscaping, and we're tossing up between a few different trees to have as a feature tree in our backyard. Japanese maple: There are so many different types of these, but we want one that's an actual tree (not a shrub or bush), and that has that gorgeous bright red leaves in Spring. My only worry is I don't know how much of the year it will stand leafless. Anyone know? Jacaranda: I love this tree, but my main worry for this one is the size it grows to. Unknown tree with pink flowers: This is a tree I've seen around, but I don't know the name of it. It's similar to the jacaranda in size, but the flowers are pink rather than purple. The problem with this one is that I have no idea what the name of it is! *lol* Flame tree: Love the red flowers on this one, but worried about the size (and width) again. If anyone has any opinions on which tree would look good and be nice for most of the year in a medium sized backyard, I would appreciate any input! Jap maples are leafless for winter, 3-4 months. Pink flower tree could be Albizia julibrissin which is another option. Largerstromia - crepe myrtles are also a good choice. The flemmings website has a lot of detail on all the trees you are looking at. The Jap maples really dislike hot winds, the leaves go crunchy and it ruins the autumn colour show.. Jacaranda's are great but get pretty big in 15 years, same with the flame tree.. hmmm id assume youll get hit with the "natural product therefore variation in colour etc" excuse. How bad are we talking? One could argue that if none of the displays or… 3 2454 Hello. I just bought a few acres in Habana, Mackay, and my horses seem to love hanging around under this tree.
