Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jun 15, 2013 1:15 pm Almost 4 years after moving in and I still have not sorted out this gardenbed ..... I had a ground cover at some point, which grew prolifically and covered the weep holes . So I had to remove it. Also, I can't build up the garden bed with more soil, for the same reason. So, as we're due to have the termite chemicals topped up soon, I need to be done with the planting asap. I figured I'd need to dig out some of the rubbish "soil", dig in composted stuff..........but, what to plant ? Rather than groundcover, how about s/thing taller ? But not too bushy ? Facing west, sitting in a shallow bed & getting quite hot against the brick wall, it's got to be really tough. Is there anything out there that would survive these criteria ? Easy to control, but at the end of the day you will need to prune back whatever is growing to satisfy the horse s**t that the termite guys spins.. Re: What to plant in shallow/narrow gardenbed facing west ? 4Jun 19, 2013 11:08 am I see you have camleias there in the opposite bed. To try and tie into these somewhat id suggest some small shrubs that will suit the brief such as - raphiolepsis, nandina, buxus, osmanthus. or if you want a groundcover that can be easily pulled back to assess your inspection points look at trachelospermum asiaticum (groundcover star jasmine) all the above are very tough. Re: What to plant in shallow/narrow gardenbed facing west ? 5Jun 19, 2013 3:27 pm OG, I can't dig out too much of the 'rubbish' you can see there currently - it's quite shallow before hitting sandstone, etc.. and I can't add too much 'good' soil in order to keep the weep holes clear. Therefore the bed will not be very deep I like your recommendations but do you think they are tough enough to grow in such a shallow bed ? Or other ornamental grasses Re: What to plant in shallow/narrow gardenbed facing west ? 12Jun 22, 2013 7:55 pm I think the pots are a great suggestion. Then I would fill the garden bed with blue metal, we used it as a cheap solution for the dead side of our house and it looks fine. Re: What to plant in shallow/narrow gardenbed facing west ? 15Jun 24, 2013 6:08 pm On the western side of our shop front we have 3 dessert roses in 3 black pots with white stones as much with some succulent things growing in between the white rocks. They all seem to pump along ok with once a week watering. Re: What to plant in shallow/narrow gardenbed facing west ? 16Jul 04, 2013 9:50 am Hi all, thanks so very much for your ideas. I am still working on them............. Still not sure what I want to do, but have to make up my mind before the next termite treatment in August.
