Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design Re: Artist Studio - Calling arty types & the not so 21Apr 27, 2008 6:58 pm ![]() In our new place I have claimed the 3rd bedroom as my scrapbooking room. For the last 3 years I have had to pack and un-pack all my stuff each time, and when that happens the kitchen table is out of action for a week, if not more. It is now at the point that I have accumulated too much stuff to pack and unpack all the time, so I will be glad to have a permanent set up. Exactly what I'm trying to fix...annoys me that she can't get a "clear run" at things. ![]() Other considerations are heating (I couldn't stand going outside across the yard in winter!), lighting (those crafts require VERY good lighting) and versatility (if DW decided to change hobbies what could it be used for, or resold?). Then when the time comes, the DW can move back into a room in the house and the teenager can move to the studio, and peace inside the house can begin again. ![]() ![]() My last place had a detached stone studio with a cellar underneath it, which I belive was th butlers quarters, and the garage and my shed was nearby. Gee how convienient. ![]() As for the cold rainy trip to and from the "work space" it actually works well because it tends to moderate the drop in visitors from the house when the weather is not so good. re working from home - it is quite often a very good idea to detach the 2 so -when you goto work, and then you leave work and go home. All be it 10 yards. And the rest of the family knows - you are home or at work. Re: Artist Studio - Calling arty types & the not so 32Apr 30, 2008 11:17 am Thanks for all the responses guys.....had really been great sifting through all the ideas.
DW and I have had a bit of chin wag about the studio, weighed up the pro's and con's of the various options and I think we have come up with a good solution. It means an add on, but into an area which doesn't compromise the garden space.....and creates a 4.2 m x 4.2 space off a living space. I'll sketch it up...might even try to "My Virtual Home" it....the only issue at this point is the external wall...do I try to match to existing recycled brickwork (probably impossible) or go to a weatherboard-type lightweight construction (Hardie product) like the loft study.....decisions....decisions..... PS....don't know if the cellar will get a gurnsey... ![]() mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Artist Studio - Calling arty types & the not so 33Apr 30, 2008 11:36 am Sounds like a great idea. Would you consider a "sunroom" style add on, that the walls are basically all glass - then matching bricks wouldn't be an issue? Don't know how practical or cost effective this would be, but I imagine it would be easier to install big windows than lay rows of bricks.

Don't know how practical or cost effective this would be, but I imagine it would be easier to install big windows than lay rows of bricks.Ray. We have, and whilst we like the looks of a sunroom, the wall we really need to match is a western wall, the other three walls are not so much of an issue.....I'd be concerned about converting it into a hot house. I could get a 950 mm eave to the western wall but I don't think it would be effective due to the position of the western sun. Maybe high set windows protected by eaves plus weatherboard look may reduce the impact of the mismatch.....? mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Artist Studio - Calling arty types & the not so 35May 01, 2008 12:43 am If it's a western wall - you won't be wanting to make is solid brick - gets very hot in summer.
See if rather than matching the wall you can make it a feature change in the wall type. Maybe goto corrogated iron that is well installated so it does look like a studio. Post some pics when you move in and we'll through some ideas around. Steve D wrote Quote: small fridge for cheese to go with the wine and champagne on warm days Didnt need a fridge - the cellar was originally built as the cream cooler for 'the dairy, so on really hot summer days, guess where I went to chill for awhile ![]() It never got above 24 degrees in the cellar with the building above it and trees shading it all the time ![]() Re: Artist Studio - Calling arty types & the not so 36May 01, 2008 2:21 am ![]() See if rather than matching the wall you can make it a feature change in the wall type. Maybe goto corrogated iron that is well installated so it does look like a studio. It's the way I'm thinking....matching will be impossible so going to a feature wall has attractions - corrugated iron would match other elements like the railing on the verandah. It would basically come out from the wall immediately in the foreground (west is to the left of the page, south being straight out), would mean dismantling part of the patio but is not a very useful part and come out 4.2 metres to make a square room. The two paned window is floor to ceiling and could be replaced with a frosted glass bifold door, or a single/double door with frosted side panels to fill out the 2.4 metre window space, to isolate the room... ....anyway you're right not enough photos to work with. I'm trying to sketch it up in My Virtual Home...but that's a right royal pain in the a**e which is why I'm up at 1:00 am. To my eyes, it'd be perfect mix in a corrogated iron extension with timber like the verandah. I'd go bifolds and consider double glazed to reduce internal house noise going into the studio, and heavily insulate the western wall. As for cost, this link will help. Re getting it done or doing it, I'd be getting a architect or god drafstman to help you ensure that the design matches the verandah so you do not spoil the current look and feel of the house. It'd be pretty easy to add an ugly extension and reduce the hosue value, so do it properly. Ahhh....
