Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 May 10, 2013 8:47 am Hi all, Our new house will be facing south with north in our backyard (open livings areas are on the north side). We are planning to roll some grass out the front, a small patch no bigger than 9x4. Will grass have trouble growing as it is quite shady in the front for the most of the day and what would be the best grass we could roll (at an affordable price) that is not too aggressive? Thanks in advance, Nick Re: Grass on south facing side 2May 10, 2013 11:40 am Hi Nick, Have a look at some of the shade tolerant buffalo turfs. There are some that will deal with up to 80% shade. Bear in mind that the more sun your lawn gets the better it will look! There are some lawn alternatives that can take heavy shade such as dicondra and native violets. Re: Grass on south facing side 4May 20, 2013 11:58 pm I'd avoid the ryes. Way too much for water. Anyway when ElNino returns, you'll be left crying about the dead grass. Lawn alternatives would be a better suggestion. lawn camomile, Dichondra, Dodonaea ceratocarpa, Hemiandra pungens, Casurina Cousin It, Re: Grass on south facing side 6Aug 22, 2013 3:08 pm Fu Manchu I'd avoid the ryes.
