Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Apr 22, 2008 11:07 am Our little brick garden beds are about to be built and the brickie doesn't do render (only bagged which I HATE and it's on our portico!!!).
Anyway .. has anybody tried to render themselves and is it something that you can get the hang of? We have tried a few tradies and they just won't touch a job that small. I walk around the estate as much as possible trying to find somebody that is in the middle of rendering and to ask if they can do a cashy but no luck as yet. Any advice is appreciated ... or if anybody in South East of Melbourne wants a few hundred bucks cash in hand for half a days work give me a yell!!! Re: Render 3Apr 22, 2008 12:03 pm Amber would you consider using the Dulux Textures render range?
There are a few different finishes available too??? Can be tinted to any colour you want and isn't too hard to apply.... http://www.dulux.com.au/html/planning/product_range_exterior_effects.aspx At least there is another option if you don't end up finding anyone?? http://youtube.com/watch?v=K-VOpr7CEqc doesn't look too hard (famous last words) I'm pretty sure that Bunnings also have brochures on rendering in the DIY section... Re: Render 6Apr 23, 2008 8:10 am awesome find!!!
a guy at work said that the hardest bit for a novice is getting it to stick to the bricks so apply bondcrete first and then have a go. So .. after watching that video I'm going to give it a go myself. Worst that can happen is it looks awful and then I find somebody to come in and fix it (maybe at that point I've convinced hubby to change the portico to render and not bagged). Thanks for the help guys ... will show you the results if they turn out ok!!! Re: Render 7Apr 25, 2008 6:06 pm We used the Dulux product to render the outbuildings at our last house. They were made of besserblock and were about 60 yrs old. The render sticks to bricks very well and we didn't use bondcrete. But it is the most awful product to work with and takes two ppl to get a good finish.
Put it on in small sections and don't choose a hot day as it will dry too quickly for you to get a chance to smooth the render. Dont do it if it is going to rain as it will streak ... it takes about 8 hours to dry. Start with a section that you won't see first as this will be your learning wall. You will get the hang of it fairly quickly. Its a bit like painting ... start in the middle of the wall and roll up and then down ... spreading the mixture evenly over the surface. Watch out for globs landing in your hair and face ... its pretty messy. Before starting: we used polyfilla to smooth the surface between the bricks otherwise you will waste a lot of the product trying to create a smooth finish. Get the hose out after you finish and hose down underneath to create a neat finish. A fair bit is wasted on your drop sheets. It is around $100 per tub and we used 1 tub per 3 metre wall so its not cheap. We used about 6 tubs for our outbuildings and the last wall looked terrific. Our current builder came over when we were signing our building contract and smiled when he saw it but said 'it looks ok ... good job'. Its an experience, very hard work, but looks much better than besserblock IMO. Good luck. Re: Render 8Apr 27, 2008 8:24 pm I'm by no means a pro but I've done a fair bit of rendering around my place on both brick and blue board. I haven't used the Dulux products as I thought it was a bit pricy for my first go.
All the products I've used are from http://www.easternrender.com.au/ and they sell Quikcote products. For over bricks it about $10 a bag, then you just paint it afterward with an external acrylic paint.
